Does anyone know if this requires to be preheated before air-frying? Smaller (4-8 quart) dedicated air-fryers are quicker that way, because they start working immediately (well, almost). My experience with larger capacity ones (like Gourmia french door) is that even for basic air-frying of few small things, you need to preheat them which takes 4-5 minutes.

Same story with this one, pre-heating is basically required.

I have been using this oven for years. I am now on my second unit. The fan died in the first unit.
Except for the fan, it is very well built. You may as well think of it as a smaller version of an oven. In fact, your regular oven will likely become a place to store pots and pans. There are more options than you will ever likely use. And it cooks well.

Having said all that...the air frying capabilities are mediocre, at best. I decided to run this next to one of the Ninja Flip Up units. What I am discovering is that, given the option, I will take air frying over most any other option. The Ninja produces much more air and does so with almost no noise.
The Breville puts out a fraction of the air and sounds like a wind tunnel doing so.
The catch is that you need to learn what temps to cook at with the Ninja. If you cook at the temps that you always have, it will burn whatever you are cooking. Even at lower temps, food cooks faster in the Ninja.
The Breville cooks slower than the Ninja...but it is not slow. It is still a little faster than a normal oven.
The quality of the Ninja air frying is worlds above the Breville. You can actually make decent fries.
I thought that the lower profile of the Ninja might be an issue...but so far it has not been the case.
It is clear that the Ninja is not as sturdy as the Breville. I really do not know if this is just in the casing or if the internals will fail faster too. But, to be fair, it is significantly less expensive.

I am finding that, despite the good service of the Breville, the lack of quality in the air fryer has led to me using the Ninja on a daily basis. The Breville is starting to gather dust. This is why I had them in a side by side .....to determine how much I would really use the sir fryer. And it is significant.

My wife has been interested in the ninja flip unit, especially since they're relatively cheap on Facebook marketplace. Are the ninjas pretty solid and likely to funciton well, even after lots of use?

I've been interested in this bigger breville unit bc I'm convincing my wife she could essentially use to bake a lot.. but we also airfry small things a lot, fries, wings, veggies.

I'm now considering leaving these big expensive units behind and saving a lot of money and counter space (we have limited) for trying a second hand ninja flip up, especially after your testimony.

I'd rather just get a cheaper Hamilton Beach/Black and Decker instead if I'm looking for a temporary alternative to a real oven. $300 for 3 years of use is kind of questionable, IMO.

I have one of the original Ninja flip style units.

One thing about is that grease will slowly drip down to the bottom of the unit and some will wind up on the counter when it's flipped. And I'm someone who's willing to wait a long time after the unit cools downs to flip, but inevitably gravity takes over and some will leak.

After almost 4 years of almost daily use, it still works but I notice the digital buttons are starting to go unresponsive from time to time. I'm guessing those buttons are probably in their last days and I'll be buying a new toaster oven sometime in 2025. I think a lot of these modern day air fryer/toaster oven combos with digital displays/buttons experience these issues after years of use.

After reading countless reviews and comments, I've concluded that all these toaster oven/air fryer combo units tend to have the same traits: nice versatility, but not as good as an air fryer as the "real" basket style air fryers. Hard to clean. Will have durability issues with buttons/displays after heavy use.

My conclusion is to not overspend on this kind of device. Just find the best deal you can on a size/style you like and try to get as many years of use out of it.

One more note about Ninja: their toaster ovens (especially the flip ovens) actually get hotter than their advertised temp. People have measured them with temperature probes and they read about 20 degrees hotter than what the Ninja's display reads. That's actually a good thing because a lot of toaster ovens don't get nearly as hot as what their set temperatures claim to be at.

If you do research, you will find that this is the common fail point...usually after approx. 3 years. If you are planning on using it more like a traditional oven, then this is a non issue and you will get many years of service. But if you want to do more air frying, this is a choke point that may not give any more service than the Ninja, even if the Ninja were prone to fail sooner. (And this is a guess...the Ninja may last for years. I do not know yet.)
I do think that if you are going for fries and wings, you are going to want to air fry. And I can tell you that on it's best day, the Breville can't match the Ninja for air frying.

Have historically had no issues with warranties on Breville coffee machines purchased from TJ Maxx, have just had to show the receipt.

I bought the non-smart, non-air fry version of this around 2010 and the LCD backlight stopped illuminating after about 2.5 years. Kept using it until air-fryers became mainstream. Excellent mechanical build quality. Just didn't like the display panel for obvious reasons.
