I own one myself (for about a year) - it's so much better than those China-made generics. They're chromed, so rust should not be an issue if you just wipe them off after each use. I've not had any issues with rust.

I have had some rust issues with these can openers but they are still some of the best available. Though, I think most can openers develop rust issues eventually so its really a non issue. My last one about 5 years before it became a pain in the ass to use.

It develops gunk over time, but a quick brish down with a metal brush, and adding mineral oil, makes it work as new. These can be disassembled too no problem.

How is this any different or better than a $3 can opener from Target. I've owned a $3 Target can opener for many years now, with no rust or any issues - works everytime. Is this item that much better to cost 3x, other than being "made in USA" ... i'm geniunely curious.

If you're happy with that $3 can opener, then by all means keep it and don't buy this one. To answer your question tho, those cheap openers are much thinner gauge metal than this Swing-A-Way design - and tend to break after a year or two. That said, I just looked in my Target app at the $3 can opener you're referencing (Room Essentials) - and the reviews are in order by most recent date. Here are the titles of the most recent 4 reviews:

"Awful. Do Not Buy!" (Dec 8, 2024)

"Broke after a few uses" (Dec 8, 2024)

"Do NOT Buy" (Oct 25, 2024)

"Rusted fast" (Oct 12, 2024)

This really is a fantastic can opener! I forget how i found it to begin with (probably SD), but it really is the best can opener I've ever used. I'm on my second in about 7 years due to the rust issues, but I've tried to wipe down a bit better after washing and this one is holding up better. Even if it does rust again, it makes opening cans so easy I don't even care about the rust.

Vastly better. The metal is thicker and they are super durable. The cheap ones fall apart with least bit of torque. These are all metal so they can handle the pressure when something becomes difficult to open.

It is really a league or two above the dollar store versions with plastic handles. I've had one for almost a decade and we use it regularly.

Guess I'm the only weirdo who refuses to use that archaic design, when we have the "safety opener" which leaves no sharp edges... and more importantly holds the lid up off the food, and makes it easy to remove AND REPLACE if you don't use the entire can.

Yep. Those do wear out after a few years. BFD.

Call me a communist. I don't care. Just like all you morons refusing to get on the bidet wagon. It's time to evolve, people.

I have the safety opener, which is currently priced at $8.99 at Target or Amazon, and I've been using it primarily since I bought it earlier this year (for $7.14). Look closely at the serrated wheel, and you will see that once the teeth start to wear, it will inevitably begin to slip and grind bits of metal from the can lid into your food. It's not invincible, and this is all going to depend on the heat treatment job the factory did on your individual wheel.

I paid $10.96 for the EZ-DUZ-IT in 2013. That's 11 years! We were regularly throwing away a Swing-A-Way or generic every 2-3 years before then. I'm sure it's probably got a speck of rust somewhere, but I don't recall pointing my finger at it and shouting "RUSTY!" the last time I used it.

I would own both. People pay more than that for electric can openers all the time.

I have had this can opener for 3 years and it is sturdy and just works. It was the top pick from America's Test Kitchen and it's one thing I just don't have to worry about anymore.

I paid twice as much for an american can opener which looks exactly like this only black handles. Its the best can opener i've had. It just works with no hassle. Well worth the money. It's been two years and zero rust.

These are the best can openers. The blade and gears are carbon steel so it shouldn't get wet and be left out, and if it does rust then a brass brush and a little oil fixes it right up.

Still buying a few as spares.
