1. Rendezvous with Rama, which coincidentally is also supposed to be getting a movie adaptation (to to be directed by Denis Villeneuve), and is a trilogy.
2. A Fire Upon the Deep (Vernor Vinge, with two other books in this series)
3. The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress
4. Children of Time (a more recent series I haven't finished yet, but I enjoyed the first book)
5. The Culture series by Iain Banks (this will keep you busy for a while as a fairly large series)

Hope they (Hollywood) doesn't screw this up. Seeing they cast Ryan Gosling, movie smells like it could be a disaster. Not that Ryan is a bad actor or anything, but he's way too pretty to play Ryland. Nerdy high school science teacher who can't keep a girlfriend? I don't think so. Zachery Levi, John Krasinski, Chris Pratt would all be better choices.
And it's not a 'one and done' movie. Definitely should be a trilogy or its own 10+ part miniseries.

Have you read it? Ryland makes numerous comments about his physical appearance being strangely fit
