Fantastic find. That's incredibly inexpensive for that long of a flight. 40,800 miles and it includes a checked bag

Would this be their fall/winter? Is end of Feb or early March still warm, or is it jacket weather?
This would be summer and approaching fall. I've been in Dec, Jan, Feb and mid-March on several occasions. The South Island can still get pretty hot (Christchurch, Queenstown) but could be very mild instead. It also depends on where you go. If you're on the Tasman Sea side, it might be a little chilly from the wind (again, especially at night) and Milford Sound likely will be chilly. Auckland is generally mild. I would bring a light jacket or fleece but probably not anything heavier. You'll likely need it going out during the evening or early morning and can take that off. In Matamata (Hobbiton), it was around 86F/30C in March a few years back while Auckland has been around 50F/10C at night needing a bit more than shorts and t-shirts.

If this is your first visit, I would strongly discourage trying to hop over to Australia in the same trip. There's so much to do in NZ that you'd not want to shortchange yourself by splitting your time. At these prices, it wouldn't be hard to go back, though!!

For a family with 4 , 9 ,9 , 5 would you say 5 days is enough? Trying to squeeze in during spring break

Also noting when I input 5 or 6 pax for eligible dates it don't show 562 it shows 760 something. Same dates for 1 pax it does show but says onlt 1 ticket available bummer..

Thinking doing either Japan or Australia or Nz during kids spring break.

New Zealand close to the size of California... You could do the Aukland area in 5 days maybe. For long haul flights like this, I wouldn't go for less than 10 days personally.

Assuming your kids have a 1 week spring break, Sydney is a good option. I did that for a kids school break and saw most of the main sights in the city. Public transport including ferries was very easy

How is Sydney in June or July? I know it's winter but am from midwest and have seen -5F however it wouldn't be fun to go on vacation to a spot that cold.

How's june July for Sydney? I like your SYD idea..if I do jUne or July can do 2 weeks cuz summer break for our kids here.

Are you leaving from LA at least? It's 13-hours and you lose 2 days going over - evening take-off and landing the morning 2 days later. If you didn't take that into consideration, you might not even have 5 days. I personally wouldn't want to go for that short of a time, but I have that 13-hour flight as well as the 5 hours to get to LA, too. I wouldn't go for less than 10 days and pick several spots to see. You'll probably be confined to Auckland area with that amount of time.

Auckland is something that is 2-3 days to see a good amount of things. Waiheke is a boat ride away, and you can rent a vehicle or take a tour on that island. I find it more for the vineyards than things for kids to do, though. It's might be a day trip, but you could squeeze in Matamata to see Hobbiton or Waitomo for the glowworms. Google Maps is pretty off on driving times, so expect a bit under 3 hours to/from Auckland. Rotorua is probably too far for a day trip and would be the geologic sights. If you've been to Yellowstone, Rotorua might be a little underwhelming - at least in my opinion. I'd not advise driving on day 1 - the roads are small, winding, and you'll be tired.

2 weeks will let you do may more than Sydney.

The weather wouldn't be like the midwest - it doesn't get that cold and wouldn't be below freezing by a wide margin. It can be very windy and rainy, though. I spent several days in Sydney just avoiding getting drenched.

You can always use that as a way to jump to other locations. Brisbane will be mild-to-warm and has one of my favorite places to visit - the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. It's also a nicer time to go to Uluru (Ayers Rock) - it won't be scorching hot but might be boring to kids. There are still tons of flies that time of year. I really enjoyed Cairns/Port Douglas area in the winter as it's still tropical and has tours of the Great Barrier Reef.

Delta now flies to Brisbane from LAX, so you could also do something like fly to Sydney and fly back from Brisbane so you don't backtrack.

Seeing you have several people going, booking basic economy could be an easy way to get separated. They won't separate young kids from a parent, but that doesn't mean they won't separate the parents. The price difference you see is when they have fewer seats at the lower price than the number you want. Delta will charge everyone the higher price. I wouldn't separate everyone to be on their own tickets to get a lower price for 1 or 2 - you're almost guaranteed to be split up then on basic economy and have the hassle of multiple itineraries and possible changes.

Hopefully you find something that works out!

...then you're dealing with another 4 hrs to LAX. That's definitely a long journey to stay for just 5 days. You'd be a zombie on day 1. It's too bad the direct Air New Zealand flights have stopped from Chicago - they had some decent prices. That flight was over 16 hours but no connection hassle. I think they're going to bring the route back in the latter part of 2025, so watch out for maybe some airfare deals when they do.

February is end of summer and March/April is fall. Better to go Feb/March than later. The South Islands can get really cold come April especially the Fjords. Wellington is cold even in December, can't imagine later in the season. It then I'm from SoCal.

Just went for 12 days. Driving in south Island is really tough, lots of mountains and terrains with roads being close to dangerous. No rails protecting the drivers in multiple places, one wrong turn and you are into the mountains and not the grass area. 100 kms will take close to 2 hours driving in the south, so I suggest you fly into Queenstown or Christchurch or Picton in the northern part of the south island.
Northern island, fly into Wellington to see that part and drive into Hobbiton/Rotorua areas with a rental car from Auckland airport.
Anything less than 10 days would be rushing and not worth it, my .02 cents.
