I do believe it's personal, based on how it's used and someone's financial situation.

- If you're doing anything taxing, M2/8GB might not make you happy. I had a similar spec MB Air M2/8GB that stunk for work. I used a lot of SaaS apps and did research, so lot's of browser tabs. And Zoom calls would have choppy video. I had to reboot daily to make sure things would keep running smooth. YMMV!

- $500 (if you buy student discount or at Microcenter etc) is 66% more than $300. If spending $300 on a computer is already a lot for you or budgets are tight, the extra $200 is a pretty big deal (and with the Costco warranty, this adds some extra protection without AppleCare). If you already aren't batting an eye at $500, and you want the added value of the new M4 and 16gb, then you're going to lean that way.

Is it right for you? Maybe. I think it's a matter of intended use and financial situation.

Hot take: if you don't know how much RAM you need, 8GB might just be sufficient for your needs. I still use my M1 Air w/ 8GB every day - it's gotten more usable with Chrome's new active tab suspension/management.

The best deal was during Thanksgiving weekend when Target offered a $15 Target gift card promotion for every $100 Apple gift card purchased. If someone managed to buy five $100 Apple gift cards during that time and used them to purchase the M4 model with 16GB RAM through Apple Education, the effective price could drop from $499 to $399. This calculation factors in the Target RedCard discount and assumes the buyer was a frequent Target shopper who could easily use the promotional gift cards. It was a no-brainer. Just adding $100 got you the M4 model with double the ram, making it a much better deal. Also, the M4 is readily available in nearly every Apple Store, eliminating the need to waste time, as is currently the case, searching various Costco locations to find leftover M2 models.

Who said this thing can't boot up from external SSD? I traded in my m2 for m4 ($260 trade in value). I bought a thunderbolt with fan/enclosure and throw in 2tb NVME. It enclosure is my main (boot) drive.

The issue with 8gb ram and 256gb ssd is that the ssd has a short tbw (lifespan) and 8gb increases likelihood of swapping which constantly uses up the tbw limit. Once ssd life is used up then it would be just trash since you cant replace the internal ssd. So with this one make sure to always use an external drive and avoid using the internal

I'm not the first to say it but I'll be the next to repeat it:

Pay $200 more and get the M4 with 16GB. Then keep it forever or until it dies.

I have this same Mini with M2 and 8GB. It's great and is good for my purposes but no reason to skimp out on something that's going to last you much longer down the road.

8gb was not "increased" since there has always been 16gb available. the 8gb model was dropped.

Because many people who don't need 16 or 32 are clueless enough to think they do, as this thread demonstrates. If you're not into serious gaming, video editing or similar memory intensive applications you're just not going to run into any issues. But why bother trying to convince anyone when you can just throw $20 bucks more into the build and raise prices by $200? That's the Apple way. You can get this same device with 16GB memory, 512GB SSD storage for a mere $1,249.99

I'm giving these to my mom, dad and sister for personal use and not one of them will ever run into resource limitations since all they're doing is surfing the internet, using productivity apps watching movies or listening to music.
