I do believe it's personal, based on how it's used and someone's financial situation.

- If you're doing anything taxing, M2/8GB might not make you happy. I had a similar spec MB Air M2/8GB that stunk for work. I used a lot of SaaS apps and did research, so lot's of browser tabs. And Zoom calls would have choppy video. I had to reboot daily to make sure things would keep running smooth. YMMV!

- $500 (if you buy student discount or at Microcenter etc) is 66% more than $300. If spending $300 on a computer is already a lot for you or budgets are tight, the extra $200 is a pretty big deal (and with the Costco warranty, this adds some extra protection without AppleCare). If you already aren't batting an eye at $500, and you want the added value of the new M4 and 16gb, then you're going to lean that way.

Is it right for you? Maybe. I think it's a matter of intended use and financial situation.

Hot take: if you don't know how much RAM you need, 8GB might just be sufficient for your needs. I still use my M1 Air w/ 8GB every day - it's gotten more usable with Chrome's new active tab suspension/management.

I currently use this configuration and it is dated. I constantly have memory issues and need to regulate the number of background apps and run one program at a time. The challenge occurs when there is an update.

I ended up buying the last one at my local Costco during my last minute Christmas shopping. It was not on display, but when I asked, they mentioned they had one left in stock. It was brand new and factory sealed. I bought it as a Christmas gift for an older family member. She is deeply invested in the Apple ecosystem, using an iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and AirPods, but sometimes she wants a much larger screen to view her photos and watch videos. Since she already has a good 27" monitor, this was the perfect gift. She can easily use the Airdrop feature to transfer files between the Mac Mini and her iPhone. The 8GB of ram is sufficient for her needs, as she primarily uses the Mac Mini for browsing the internet, watching YouTube, and light photo editing. At just $299, I have no complaints at all.

I was able to snag one through Uber Eats from a Costco in South Jersey. With the Costco Uber gift cards promotion and 20% off Grocery from Uber Eats, I had one delivered with fees, taxes and tips for under $240! Thanks OP!

Just fyi the m4 minis have an upgradeable ssd slot. While soldered in previous Mac minis, the m4 ssd is likely proprietary but is not soldered and upgradeable.

What gets me is that something like this is $299 but a similar spec MacBook Air is $899. Someone should explain to me how a laptop form factor suddenly is $600 more. Are the chips a different size and footprint and therefore more expensive to make? Or is it all the same components basically?

One product is on clearance from a regular price of around $400 (Edu) and one (MBA, $800 at BB) isn't.

And yes, clearly battery, screen, trackpad, camera, and far higher warranty risk on all of the above does have a cost, too.

Are we still in the phase where Apple has prevented the ability to upgrade memory hardware? I know it was a money mongering decision in the couple few years, I just haven't followed closely enough to know if they stopped puckering their financial starfishes.

I assume not, cuz Apple, but maybe?
