I tried both and returned the XM5. the headband that sits on top of your head, at least for me and a few others, is REALLY uncomfortable. The fact that its much skinnier compared to previous iterations mean that most likely if the top of your head isn't perfectly flat, the band will put a decent amount of pressure right on the center and even hurt. I could not stand it and they became a literal pain to wear.
Its a pretty common issue if you look it up, but YMMV

That was a price mistake, and people keep repeating the same... It lasted for a few hours, not even a day.

Even I got XM3 for $101 from Target when they were on sale (way back), but again, YMMV.

Which has better noise cancelling? I lost my XM5s and need a new pair. LOVED those but if the noise cancelling is just as good on the XM4s then I will get those.

Xm5 are the better headphones if you are going to be wearing them for long trips. The argument people make about the xm4 being better is that it can FOLD for travel. Having owned both the xm4 get your ears hotter and are not as comfortable to wear. The folding doesn't mean much to me as I'm planning to wear them when I travel. And the included xm5 case fit easily in backpack.

Xm5 does a better job in cancelling airplane engine noise. But it real world usage the difference is not substantially noticable, especially for the price difference. If anything the transparent mode is where you notice a bigger difference.

For anyone with a Costco membership i would recommend you purchase them there for 279 and have the ability to return them whenever you need to as the return policy is applicable for this. Especially knowing Sony has terrible battery issues with alot of their headphones

Thanks. Blocking out airplane noise was actually one of my favorite uses. Is it THAT noticeable? My AirPod pros do a decent job but it's definitely nowhere close to what the XM5s did.

I would say on airplanes xm5 are like a 10-15% improvement on blocking out the Deeper frequency. As long as you're playing sound on them you won't notice much of a difference, my biggest gripe with eh xm4 was they got my ears hot and were bulkier, but that's subjective to the user. Sound quality wise xm4 has a more bass driven sound signature. Both are equally good in sound quality just different sound profiles out of the box you can adjust.

Been using the XM4s for 3 years now for traveling and I finally decided to buy Airpods Pro 2 and I have to say, the NC on the airpods are better. It's also so much more convenient.

Now at home, I use the XM4s (except when on work calls), but for traveling, I would recommend the Airpods pro 2 over the XM4s (in case anyone is curious). I was blown away by its NC.

Costco does have a 1 year return limit on electronics from what I heard. other non electronic stuff can be returned anytime.

Headphones don't apply in the electronic 1 year return. I've returned headphones 3 years later and have gotten a full refund.
