40-count is still available at Costco for roughly the same $/battery.

Same price for AAA. In fact Costco has all sizes available, even 9Vs.
Yeah agreed. The problem is Amazon went to hell and batteries are so easy to fake. I would buy this deal in a hurry if it was Costco… but Amazon mmmm no
Amazon sells duds. Not buying batteries from them anymore.

I've had horrible results with costco duracells leaking after sitting for a year, but everyone saying amazon sells leaky ones so maybe they all suck lately.

Out of all of them I have had the best shelf life and good run time with Costco's own Kirkland batteries. Always a good price too

Yep, Kirkland's are great and the Duracells at Costco are a better bargain than this.

They are the leakiest batteries on the market, they used to be the best. I have two ruined Maglites due to leaking Duracells. The batteries I'm finding in various devices that have been sitting for years and still good and not leaking are the older Members Mark Sam's Club brand. But I actually found a small Duracell Durabeam pocket two AA battery flashlight in the back of a drawer a couple weeks ago and I could tell it had batteries due to the weight and thought oh boy this is going to be ruined but the darn thing worked and much to my surprise it had Radio Shack Enercells Alkalines in it still burning bright, I couldn't believe it. I know why I had the old flashlight because I had 3 relatives that worked at a nearby Duracell factory, all retired at least 25-30 years ago. They were able to get batteries and flashlights dirt cheap through a program with Duracell. Those Enercells aren't dated but have to be at least 15 years old.

Why does this keep happening with Duracell?

Project Farm reviewed AA batteries recently. Kirkland and Duracell batteries are nearly identical in performance. Lithium batteries tend to outperform alkaline batteries:

My experience with Costco/Kirkland batteries have been that they're the very worst, with most of them leaking pretty quickly into usage. Good for short-term devices (that I'll run through within 1-2 months) but for anything 4-6 months or longer, they're iffy.

Duracell has been better for me, especially with their guarantee. If they leak and ruin a device, they'll mail you a prepaid visa card for the value of it. Ideally it wouldn't happen, but the fact they stand behind it is better than Costco's "You can return it for a refund if you're not satisfied"

YMMV, I haven't had Duracells leak on me in about 6-7 years.. before that I had 3 cases where they did, but duracell cut me a check for the product damaged each time

But Duracells have been known to leak for a long time, and they never acknowledged the issue (I don't count cutting a check for product damage, the damage is done) so I am done with them for life. Some people may use them fast enough to ignore the huge numbers of others reporting leaks online but if it leaks before the expiration date it's not okay, or even when not close to date.
