1. There are two timelines for the cancellation. If you cancel a line before 3 days it was active then the activation fee is waived. If you cancel it within 14 days from activation under buyers remorse then no bill is charged but activation fees need to be paid. The line activates on right when you place the order not the day you receive the phone on hand so you might have to pay the activation fee of $35.

2. When you receive the phone, call ATT to pay off the balance. You might need to wait for a day to perform the next steps.

3. You can use SIM swap method method to unlock the device.

4. When you receive the phone activate it on ATT with the SIM provided. Make sure it shows up on myATT app/in the web so ATT knows and registers the IMEI in the network. Then put the SIM in another unlocked phone, reboot, make some calls and make sure this unlocked phone is now showing under the line in app/web portal.

"REFRESH MY CONNECTION" which is on your online account directly under your total balance/view bill.

5. Now go to ATT unlock portal https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/ (in incognito mode) and then choose not an ATT customer and use the IMEI of s23 S22+ and submit an unlock request using a different email, phone number, name etc not associated with the ATT account.

6. If the IMEI1 (pSim) of the request comes back with an email saying device not registered etc, use the IMEI2 (eSIM) of S23 S22+ in step 5.

7.Confirm the unlock request email and receive the unlock code.

8. ONLY CANCEL THE LINE AFTER YOU HAVE UNLOCKED THE PHONE. OTHERWISE, YOU MIGHT NOT BE ABLE TO UNLOCK IT ANYMORE. (if you did cancel before unlock, it may unlock after 60 days post-activation but no data points yet)

--------------------------------
If interested in porting out the new line to cancel, here are some eSIM options which can do it fairly quickly. In all cases you also have one month of active service which you can use for port out to a 3rd carrier, ex: Metro or Total Wireless has port-in deals.

Option 1: Visible eSIM, $5 first month with referral code (can easily find one online). If using a family member's referral code, they get $20 service credit so net "profit" could be $15.

Option 2: US Mobile eSIM free trial, ports out within 5 minutes, no need to wait for physical SIM

Option 3: If your family has Tello, you can start a new Tello line with a referral and they get $10 Tello dollars. Your cost is about $10 for the minimum cost plan so it's net $0. eSIM activation is also available.

---------------------------------

After unlocking if you are feeling adventurous and want to flash the phone to stock Samsung firmware, you can follow these steps. Don't do this before unlock since AT&T firmware is required to unlock. Multiple reasons to do this: a) AT&T firmware doesn't allow you to get software updates unless an AT&T sim card is inserted into the phone. b) remove AT&T bloatware c) it's pretty straightforward to do

1. There are many models of the S series but in US two models are imp. S...U is carrier locked version and S...U1 is the unlocked US version. The firmware for these versions are interchangeable, so you can flash the AT&T model with the U1 firmware.

2. Download patched odin v3.14.1_3B_PatchedD.zip from https://xdaforums.com/t/patched-o...1.3762572/ as regular odin does not allow flashing mismatched firmware.

3. Download the firmware from S911U1 S906U1 XAA version using frija https://github.com/SlackingVetera...a/releases (fast) or from https://samfrew.com/firmware/mode.../Desc/0/10 (slow). Extract as there will be multiple files. Direct link to firmware for S906U1 (S22+ November '24 security patch): https://samfw.com/firmware/SM-S90...U1UEU7EXK6

4. Make sure developer mode is turned on in the phone. Install https://developer.samsung.com/android-usb-driver on your PC.

5. Put the s23 S22+ in download/recovery/odin mode by doing the following. Power down. While the phone is off, press Volume up and down together, plug in a USB-C cable from the phone to your computer, and a green screen shows up. On that screen, press Volume up to go into recovery mode.

6. Start odin on your PC and then select different files for different categories and then start. There are two CSC files. Choose HOME_CSC if you want to keep user data like installed apps and settings, choose CSC you want to wipe everything clean like a factory reset. Note that the AP file will cause the Odin application to hang for a while, don't panic.

7. Hit start and wait til it finishes. It should now be the US retail firmware.

== Will ATT send me a bill after the account is cancelled?

Firstly, keep the ATT buyers remorse policy handy when you talk to them. See https://www.att.com/wireless/return-policy/ click on "Consumer and Signature Customer Program Devices and Accessories" and here are the policy terms

"Service Cancellations within 14 Days. You may call us at 800-331-0500 to cancel wireless service. You are responsible for all applicable fees, prorated access charges, taxes, surcharges, or other charges through the termination date. AT&T will refund your activation fee, if any, if service is terminated within 3 days of activation. The charges for service used on the account before the service termination date may be applied against any down payment."

ATT will send you a bill with the full amount even after you cancel your account so you have to do couple of things to get rid of charges.

1. When you open the bill in myATT app/att website there will be something called "Don't recognize this fee" under the activation. You can click on it to get rid of a activation fee. This is an instant and automatic credit. Also this works even if you cancelled the account after 3 days.

2. Chat with CS to get rid of rest of the charges. Make sure to not fall for credit in the next bill/adjusted in the next bill, Be polite but persistent that you want charges to be credited now. Bring up the policy if you have to.

See https://slickdeals.net/f/17327499-oneplus-nord-n30-5g-128gb-unlocked-chromatic-gray-cph2513-best-buy-0 recent interactions with ATT CS.

-----------------

If you received an unactivated SIM, and cannot activate on AT&T's website, see the following posts. Do not do these if you got an activated SIM.

post 613, 655, 1024 - multiple people getting a new BYOD line with the locked phone and unlocked same day via website or myATT app
post 880 - you can also unlock using an existing (friend's, relative's) active postpaid AT&T account without opening your own line
Steps from OP's previous deal:

1. You can pay off the phone or your line as soon as you get it delivered in either CASH or by calling IVR at 611 "Pay off Device".
2. You will have to pay $99 only to pay it off. Tax will be charged upfront on 99 based on your state.
3. You can cancel the line after you pay off the device . No question will be asked.
4. You need to pay $35 upgrade free or if new line.
5. You can cancel new line with in 3 days and $35 will not be charged . only $5-10 bill depend on your usage. Worst case scenario , $35 charge if you cancel after 14 days and 14 days of monthly plan bill around $30.
Hi, GK, Happy Holidays!.
I bought S22Plus now and this is my first phone deal from Walmart and AT&T combination. Yes, OP is awesome and glad he is helping other SD members.

I paid $99 4hrs back and still getting this error in unlock portal "You can't unlock your device until your installment plan is paid off. If you pay off your device as part of your monthly bill, wait until the start of your next bill period to unlock it."
How long folks have waited to submit unlock request? 12hrs or 24hrs
I had to wait almost exactly 24hrs. But it worked fine around that. I guess it doesn't hurt to try every few hours.

I finally managed to get both my phones unlocked - one was a freebie, the other did get scanned so I had to pay the $99+taxes.
Thank you to all that helped create the Wiki page and contribute to the threads.

I am the lucky one that the sim card from Walmart didn't work. I called the 800 service phone number and talked to ont Rep, spent 1 and half hours and they cancelled the phone number come with the cellphone/from walmart and issued a new sim/number to ship to me.
when I received and insert the new sim, it is activated already.
I then followed the wiki instruction by inserting sim to a unlocked phone but can't get my account updated with the new phone.
Then I close wifi on the unlocked phone, downloaded ATT app, log in and the unlocked phone showed up.
I went back to the S22 and use incognito mode of chrome browser, request to unlock S22 using the link provided, a different name, phone and email address.
It worked and I received two email in 5 mins, one to confirm the request in 1 mins, and 2nd with approval decision in 3 mins.
Thanks for everyone's help.

I received unactivated S22+ on 01/06/25, went to ATT store opened a new line and asked the ATT rep for the lowest plan and somehow ended up with a premium line with insuranced added to new line. No worry, since I was gonna canceled it the next day.
Unlocked and canceled line the next day 01/07/25. Cool.
4 days later received email and text that I have a final bill. No problem, go on chat to cancel.

Cancelling final bill on AT&T.

Good afternoon!
Saturday 04:42 PM
[AT&T] : Hi, thanks for chatting with the AT&T virtual assistant. What brings you here today?
[Me] : Bill concern
[AT&T] : Let me get your bill to see if I can find the issue.
[AT&T] : I see this is your first bill. This can have one-time fees plus new and pro-rated charges. Let me look to get you more information.
[AT&T] : Looking at your bill, I found these changes. These charges can affect your bill's total. Which one do you want to know more about?
- a Pending Credit
- One Time Charges
- See all changes
- None of these
[Me] : Total bill, I shoudn't have any charges on my bill
[AT&T] : The new charge I see is an Activation Fee. Let's talk about it.
[AT&T] : An Activation Fee applies for each new line of service or device upgrade
[AT&T] : I see you activated a new line ending in 6969, which is why you have a one-time fee of $35.00.
[AT&T] : Is there anything else I can help you with?
- Yes
- No
[Me] : yes, my current balance should be 0 or closed to zero
[AT&T] : Do you want to move your service to a new address or cancel it?
- Move Service
- Cancel Service
[Me] : I already canceled my service 3 days ago.
[AT&T] : Sure, I can help you cancel your wireless service. One moment while I check your account.
[AT&T] : Let me try connecting you with someone who can get you the help you need.

***Connected to live agent.***
***Catherine is here to help!***
[Catherine] : Thank you for contacting AT&T, please allow me a moment to review the reason for your chat.
[Me] : sure
[Catherine] : I see that you are concerned about bill charges for one line which had been cancelled long time ago is that correct ?
[Me] : yes cancelled 3 days ago
[Catherine] : Thank you for bringing this to my attention. No worries, I will certainly check and help you.
[Catherine] : Can I get the wireless number you're chatting in about, please?
[Me] : I believe the number is 911-911-6969
[Catherine] : "Under federal privacy law, it is your right and our duty to protect your account information. May I use your information during this Visit (Retail) / Call (Call Centers) to discuss products offered by AT&T companies? Your decision will not affect your service."
[Me] : yes
[Catherine] : Thank you for giving your consent on required disclosure
[Catherine] : Thank you for waiting on the chat . I see that the phone line 911-911-6969 has been cancelled on 01/07/2025 .
[Me] : yes, correct. It was cancelled within 3 days of activation
[Catherine] : I understand
[Catherine] : Total due amount is $105.13 that needs to be paid .
[Me] : It is under your buyer remorse policy
[Catherine] : If your final bill has a balance of $0, you receive an email confirming your $0 balance. Don't forget, you can view your bill details at att.com or myATT app.

You have 60 days from the day your service ends to access your ATT online account. The final bill will be generated within 1-2 billing cycles from the effective date of cancellation.

[Me] : I shouldn't have a balance of 145.80
[Me] : Service Cancellations within 14 Days. You may call us at 800-331-0500 to cancel wireless service. You are responsible for all applicable fees, prorated access charges, taxes, surcharges, or other charges through the termination date. AT&T will refund your activation fee, if any, if service is terminated within 3 days of activation.
The charges for service used on the account before the service termination date may be applied against any down payment.

[Catherine] : I appreciate you for sharing that info
[Catherine] : Since the first bill generated and you have cancelled service so you need to wait for the final bill . As an updated bill will be sent and if it is $0 you will be receiving an email confirming
[Catherine] : Don't forget, you can view your bill details, cancelled line status, any account changes at att.com or myATT app.
[Catherine] : you need to wait 1-2 billing cycle to get the final bill .
[Me] : No, I want my bill prorated today
[Me] : not 1-2 billing cycle
[Catherine] : I completely understand
[Catherine] : As per att cancellation policy we are unable to remove the charges which is due on the account as the account got cancelled so we need to wait 1-2 billing cycle
[Me] : it is canceled within 3 days. What charges?
[Me] : I am not waiting 30-60 days for a bill I shouldn't have.
[Catherine] : Since you were on advanced billing cycle so you billed advanced for that particular line and bill generated, you dont have to pay the bill now just wait 1-2 billing please wait for final updates
[Me] : Is this how ATT scam all their customers?
[Me] : Holding billing hostage for 30-60 days cycles?
[Me] : Is there a supervisor or higher up who can handle this issue?
[Catherine] : Allow me a moment to check this
[Catherine] : Thank you for waiting on the chat
[Catherine] : I checked with my supervisor and explained this issue. My supervisor has approved one time credit of $105.13.
[Catherine] : I am processing one time credit $105 now . Please stay connected
[Me] : Ok thank you
[Catherine] : you are welcome
[Catherine] : Just to keep you informed, I'm still working on your request. I'll update you shortly.
[Me] : Ok
[Catherine] : One time credit of $105.13 has been applied on the account , you may need to refresh the account to view updated balance $0.
[Catherine] : I'll send a confirmation of what I've done for you today via Email/Text once the chat is ended.
[Catherine] : I would like to ensure that all of your concerns/queries have been addressed today so that you do not have to reach out to us for the same. Is there anything else I can assist you with?
[Me] : Yes, thank you. No, this is all.
[Catherine] : Although we have cancelled your service today, please know that if you change your mind, you can reactivate your services in the future. Have a wonderful day.
[Catherine] : Happy to help! Thank you for choosing AT&T. We appreciate your business.

You didn't need to go all aggro on the rep when you're canceling. When the first bill generates, sometimes it'll be 0 already. If not you follow the wiki to remove all charges. I had two lines that I canceled on day 1. One had charges that I was able to remove by phone call, one came in at $0 right from the get go. You don't need to fight anyone.

For me, the bill of $110 was generated the day after I ported out. I removed the activation fee using the "Don't recognize " button. Chatted with CS to remove the other charges last night, didn't get anywhere at all. He insisted that I wait until the next bill to see "updated" charges, even when he refused to credit me anything. He even said I need to return the phone to get credit, even though it wasn't bought from ATT. Really frustrating.

Gonna try again today during the day and ask for supervisor if necessary. Is phone call easier than chat?

Sounds like you got an exceptionally dumb rep. But in those cases, it's not helpful to call out their incompetence. Just call or chat again. Phone reps seem to have more access to canceled accounts.

I'd chat again. Also mention that the line was cancelled under buyers remorse.

so I was able to unlock my activated 3rd phone, but I have a 2nd phone that is unactivated.

I put the sim from the 3rd phone, sent some text, made a call, browsed. Logged in to my att.
My non AT&T phone used for 1st sim swap was now replaced by my 2nd phone.

I did un unlock request, but got this error:
The device you want to unlock is active on another AT&T account. The account owner needs to remove the device from their account first. For assistance, call 800.331.0500.

Signup for a new line?

you used 1 line to unlock 2 phones?

I tried sim swap and unlocked phone was showing on app amd browser:

I'm getting errors unlocking my unactivated phone.

I tried in App when I put back sim on unactivated S22. I confirmed S22 is showing on browser and App. App said ineligible for unlock.

Those of you with unactivated phones, did you have to setup a new account with AT&T in person? I tried going the BYOD route online but they can only mail me a SIM card instead of eSIM activation. Anyone successful activating eSIM BYOD online?

My order from 1/1 is being delivered today. From Az. On 1/1 after I put in my order at Walmart.com I had got an automated email from ATT asking me to confirm my email address. It mentions an account number ending in XXXX. So I assume an ATT account has been created.

Can I still receive an inactivated phone today? If I do receive an inactivated phone do I have to cancel the ATT line which might have been created?

This seems like the iPhone Mini deal from 1-2 year old. A lot of folks got Verizon iPhones which were never activated.
