Every port on a Thunderbolt 4 device that isn't Thunderbolt (i.e. a path to support internal SSD) must share a single 10GBps slice of USB bandwidth.

This is not common knowledge. But leave it to Intel to invent something and cripple it. Not the first time they have done it thinking it will win them market share.

We also have to thank Intel for HDCP whose sole purpose was to prevent some niche pirating that was not a huge problem. A shitty evil
Corp all around.

Whoa there cowboy! All of those (save for the Kensington) are standard USB hubs, not Thunderbolt!

Thunderbolt 3 docks inherently have 40Gbps of combined throughput for the ports, whereas those USB-C dock have 10Gbps of bandwidth shared among all of the peripherals, including display. If you're really pushing the limits with simultaneous heavy use of a 4K display, 1Gbps LAN and and attached USB device, you're going to run out of bandwidth.

Even more importantly, those hubs either don't come with a charger, and/or don't support pass-through charging. A Thunderbolt dock does both. And the Kensington supports 60w vs. 87w on this Western Digital.

In summary, you're not comparing apples-to-apples for those (cheaper) USB-C docks. If you're using this D50 dock with a MacBook (or even Mac mini), you'll get two independent video outputs.

I realize you're probably on Windows, but if you bought any of those for use with a Mac, that 'dual HDMI' would literally get you two identical monitor outputs, mirrored to each other.
EDIT - clarifying extended monitor support/mirroring.
EDIT #2 - the other nice thing about the D50 (compared to the cheaper docks linked) is the ability to add/change to a longer cable to your laptop/PC. Most of the hubs have permanently-attached cables, and they're typically short to reduce the chance of signal degradation.

It's got a buid in fan.. your ssd still gets hot? would adding a heatsink help?
also, do you have the mac mini sitting on top of the D50

The build in fan doesn't work. A lot of people complained about it. I added a heatsink which helped a lot. I don't think it matters if I put it on top of mac or not. Can't really complain for the price

Enlighten me as I might be stupid.
We have a number of Thunderbolt docking stations with dual monitor outputs, and far more ports than this for the same price if not cheaper.
Is the only advantage that it has a hard drive enclosure and RGB lighting? I have a USB C dongle that has dual HDMI, and another one that has dual display port.

Aside from the Kensington and Belkin, I'm not familiar with any Thunderbolt dock <$100 that has dual monitor outputs. Neither the CalDigital T3 Plus nor T4 dock supports native dual-monitor connectors.

The benefit of this dock (in addition to the SSD capability) is the TB3 output, which supports display output, so a simple USB-C to HDMI/DP adapter will get you that second monitor, both at 4K.

Link to another Thunderbolt dock @ ~$50 that has 'far more ports'? Also, this supplies 87watts charging, higher than many (60w).

I confirmed a new functionality... You can connect this dock to an iPad w/USB-C and get both mirrored and extended display to an external monitor. The iPad will also recognize USB attached storage and Ethernet port for the iPad.

This won't work with those handheld/portables. Need a Windows or macOS laptop to best utilize this dock. You plug one Thunderbolt cable into your laptop (like keep this dock permanently at your desk) and now your monitor works, you LAN, your laptop is powered and you have plenty of spare ports for hardwired keyboard, etc. Plus this acts as a storage device.
It works fine with the rog ally x and the legion go as they both have usb4 the only one it wouldn't work well with would be the steamdeck

The fan works but according to the Reddit post on buildapcsales subreddit the fan only turns on at high temps triggered by the ssd and not the internal temp of the device itself so it takes a lot of heat for it to turn on

Good to know, I'll correct my post. I have a SteamDeck but not the ROG/Legion Go. Didn't realize they supported USB4.

That's good to know. But I'm using 980 pro and it consistently hitting 70c+ which is above the recommended the working temperature. I'm not feeling comfortable using it 24/7. With the lid removed, the temperature dropped 10c. Then adding the heatsink, the temperature dropped another 20c-25c. Now, it's good with my Mac mini running 24/7.

This is like a splitter that gives you more ports and also has a slot for drive built in. You have to supply your own drive
One quick question though what is the size limitation that you can install, can I install a 4tb nvme M. 2?
