My friends just returned from this exact trip (to SO/) and said it was atrocious.
They are avid scuba divers and went to the Maldives for that; said it was rather challenging coordinating with the SO/ staff to get to their scuba destination
They told me that if it wasn't for their daily scuba activity they would have been bored off their assess -- literally noting to do but sit there and stare at the water. They also said it was hot af, you're basically on the equator, so being outside for any extended period of time is extremely uncomfortable. They said everything is super expensive, including all excursions (including snorkling which was $250 per person per day). They also said alcohol is pretty much forbidden -- it's only allowed in very few places and is also super expensive.
Definitely not worth flying halfway around the world to visit this place -- you'd be much better off going to the Caribbean if you're in North/South America, a Greek/Turkish Island if you're in Europe, or Bali/French Polynesia if you're in Asia.

That is too bad. They make the trip sound intriguing and fun and busy.

The whole point of most all-inclusives is to chill and do nothing. To each their own I guess.

No disrespect, but exactly did they want to do? It is a group of small islands surrounded by gorgeous water. If you are not doing water activities, there isn't much to do.
Regarding the alcohol, that is something they should have known beforehand.

We've never been, and the boredom is my fear too. That, and the 2-day travel to get there from the US. We do have some older friends (early 50's empty nesters) that went last year (don't know the resort), but they absolutely LOVED IT! All they did was snorkeled, SUP, lounge around, and drink non-stop every day. They go to a new all-inclusive resort each year, that's their thing... lounging and day-drinking. Mexico, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Maldives, etc. They come home, I ask them "how was it? how were the towns, restaurants, hikes? did you explore at all?" they respond "it was great. and don't know, we didn't leave the resort. we chilled, ate, and drank". Hard pass for me, I fear I'd be bored out of my skull and request a flight to leave after day 2. I'd much rather go to Hawaii, Caribbean, or Greece - same beautiful turquois waters, and so much more to do.

Kinda odd that getting speedboat transfers from a Male is a perk nowadays.. guess that's the new normal.

Transfers can cost $700+ pp for resorts which are further away and require a seaplane flight.

The Maldives' new $50-240 airport departure tax

For tickets issued as of December 1, 2024, the Maldives will be hiking the taxes that it charges air travelers (this is based on ticketing date, and not travel date). This applies for travelers with itineraries departing the Maldives, and the fees will be included in ticket prices, so they don't have to be paid in person

Yeah but why can't the speedboat transfer be with a female? Do the males bring some sort of protection or peace of mind?
