This model has a dual-core, 4th generation Intel i5 and the 4GB of RAM is soldered and cannot be upgraded. As such, this is not going to be a good candidate for re-purposing as a Windows PC (too little RAM, unsupported CPU for Windows 11).

Good luck!

This item really serves no purpose even at this price point aside from setting up for something like dietpi https://dietpi.com/blog/?p=1444 but even then for the foot print wouldn't be worth it.

I bought a refurb 2014 i5 mac mini running as a headless. It's smoother and more stable than my Rpi4

I run opnsense on a 2014 Mac mini. I bought it a few years ago for like 39.99 used.

I wouldn't pay this price. Even the late 2012 i7 is better than this. I own that one too.

THIS MACHINE OFFICIALLY does not get any updates from Apple. Last OS you can run is Monterrey I believe. So if you get this it should be to install other software or you need to look into getting patches/updates some other UNOFFICIAL way like using opencore legacy patcher

The 2014 has thunderbolt ports. You can get Apple thunderbolt to Ethernet adapters that are very reliable. They support 5Gb per second connection from what I remember reading. So I don't even use the Ethernet port on the device. Just those

This model does allow you to add a NVME for very cheap and pretty easy installation. You should try to get an 8gb model and use the NVME to use caching if you run out of ram. $9 for the adapter and then $25-$50 for the NVME. Runs pretty good using older legacy OS or software. I still use FCP 7 and Logic 9. Great little machine if the price is right.

Thunderbolt adapters are very reliable. Not like usb adapters. I researched this a ton. Let me
Know if you that's what you were wondering about or if you wanted to know more. Opnsense firewall connects to wifi6 router in AP mode and extender. Gives great coverage. I can remote via wireguard vpn whenever I want and I use it to share media more easily.

This whole soldered ram business is one of the most wasteful and anti-consumer things to come out of Apple. Along with removing micro SD card slots from phones.

In this case of this particular cost-reduced model you couldn't be more spot-on. The soldered RAM is DDR3. There's no story to spin about either the integration of RAM and CPU (as is the case with the M1 and forward) or the use of DDR5 (which made soldered designs easier to implement). Then again, the Mac Mini has in many ways been a perfect capture of the seesaw in a single Apple product between consumer value vs. margin to the seller. The later 2018 model [everymac.com] of Mac mini was a much more extensible design that arguably provides value to this day as a solid productivity machine, but the retail price was a joke (nearly double the original MSRP of the 2014 model). The current M4 model may be a completely sealed box, but for the money represents a much greater value than this 2014 model ever did in its base configuration... especially when you consider that the M4 Mac mini in real dollars is actually significantly cheaper than the 2014 model was at retail(!).

Good luck!
Jon
