What would be a better option? I know nothing about this sort of thing, but my kid keeps complaining about his controller drifting 🤷🏼

You can buy a controller with joysticks that have hall effect sensors. Some are licensed by Xbox.
This one is wired: https://slickdeals.net/f/18023964-8bitdo-ultimate-wired-controller-w-hall-effect-joysticks-and-hall-triggers-for-xbox-windows-black-29-99-free-shipping-w-prime-or-on-35?src=frontpage&attrsrc=Frontpage%3AType%3AMissed

A warranty from MS unfortunately. BB no longer offers 4 yr warranties since ppl turn these in so much, its 2 now.. MS is 3 yrs... if ur gonna play games like roblox or rpgs that don't use a lot of stick force then u might be fine. Everyone I know that plays mp shooter games or fighter has gotten stick drift. There are some that have a halo(sp?) type analog stick by different manufacturers

Is this a problem with just this controller or all of them? I have a PS4 DualShock and haven't dealt with stick drift after 7+ years. I don't game that much though.

Not sure about the MS "core" ones...but these and elites have issues. I have a TB Recon and PowerA with no issues, but they're wired. Not sure about others non-MS or Playstation.

The controllers that don't get it is actually ones with "hall effect" sensors, not halo as I had stated.

Yes, but they still run off of AA batteries. You need to buy a battery pack to make them rechargeable.
