i have the 2023 i'd.4 on a lease and can honestly say i'm counting down the days until this car goes back

one of the worst cars i've ever owned, technology is very poorly designed and frustrating, countless recalls and range is mediocre at best.

there are many more comparable options when it comes to EV. Chevy Equinox being one that is also very well priced.

My personal opinion would be to get him a used car if he or she a new driver. Cheaper insurance and less fear of damage. Damaging a leased car is going to be costly. Not meaning to offend or anything, just providing my own experience as an ex-college student.

Might want to consider a used EV instead. Model year 23 one owner vehicles under 25k should qualify for an additional 4k discount. the lease deal looks to be 10k per year for mileage. Prices exclude taxes and fees. I have an id 4. Can't say I would recommend it

Why would you add a young person to your insurance? You are insuring your vehicle, not the person driving it. I never added my kid to my policy. The only bad thing is they pay more the first time they get insurance and own a vehicle. But at that point, it is time for them to grow up.
So, your kids didn't get a driver's license when they lived with you then? My 17 year old lives with me and drives. So I have to get him an insurance

This is the sleeper cost for EVs that people overlook until they sign.

It's not an EV problem as much as a "new tech" issue. Parts are scarce. Any mid-level accident effectively totals the vehicle. Insurance has responded accordingly with higher rates, even for historically low-risk persons.

As much as I'd like to pull the trigger on an EV, there's absolutely zero logic for "why" when a hybrid CR-V does all the same stuff for cheaper (minus the instant torque).
Hybrid CR-V isn't cheaper, though. You can get a model Y for around $37k before taxes and fees (with the federal EV tax credit). EV tax credit probably going to get deleted this year, though.

Plus, I can fully charge my EV at my home for basically 1/4th the price of gasoline.

insurance was actually cheaper for my Model Y than my previous vehicle which was a Corolla. Liability only. Full coverage, 100% it's going to be more expensive just because very few auto repairs know how to repair it.

I was at the car event and had the opportunity to test drive most of the EVs on the market now. ID was the most disappointing experience. There was nothing exciting about this car. I don't even remember if there was anything that stood out compared to competition. Ergonomy, space, driving, steering feedback, features... Nothing. Plain, boring appliance. Not even a nice place to commute in.

Previous owners don't seem to like this car. As others have pointed out, there are similar lease deals for better cars that come around occasionally. I just leased a long range, dual motor Ioniq 5 SEL for $162/month (4k due at signing). It's a fantastic car. I've owned a model 3 in the past so I at least have that comparison point.

Here in the great state of CA, it's close to 50c/KWh charging at home. That's more expensive than gas at $4/gal

My son at 19, got him a Tesla. 25k of damage. Took 1 month to fix it. At that age they think they can drive better than you. Perhaps yes. But safely no. Especially if driving for 30 plus years! I said once your on your own, own insurance and car. Drive the way you want!

Awful sales performance in 2024 for a pretty sub-par EV. They should be giving these away.

Look elsewhere - there's so many competitive models in this compact SUV space and most will offer a more compelling package than this ID.4.

I thought the insurance price spikes the moment you add an young driver to the insurance, although the parent is technically the primary insurer
It does some. Ours went up $40/month when adding a sixteen year old licensed driver.

You have to add them once they get their license if they live in your household.

Your new model y insurance was not cheaper than your used corolla for the same type of coverage.
