This could be the silliest comment I've ever seen on SlickDeals. This is possibly even worse than the usual, "disks are dumb, haven't you heard of streaming," comments.

Oppenheimer? Barbie? The Batman? Dune Part 1?

If you have a legit 7.2.6 home theater like some of us do, there are a number of movies on this list that are worth owning for the HT experience alone. Not to mention the fact that plenty of these are just good movies.

Enjoy your 10 Mbps stream, and let the rest of us enjoy quality in peace.

I just scrolled through the list on Amazon. The OP only gave a taste. This is actually a pretty impressive selection of movies this time, everything from enduring classics to critically-acclaimed newer movies to popular crowd pleasers. Even most picky of movie snobs should find a few favorites in there.

Not everything may be to everyone's taste, but there are certainly options for most people's tastes. It's a pretty wide variety.

In all seriousness, this is pointless. Each of us here on this forum likes things the other does not, and vice versa. We can debate objective merits, but I find Return of the King to be more far more entertaining than Sharpie on a Shark. And that's the point - to be entertained. Frankly, half of Best Picture Oscar winners don't interest me in the least. Some people love The English Patient. You couldn't pay me to watch it. Moonlight? I'd rather eat sand.

Please don't buy joker 2. I generally like musicals (if that doesnt already turn most people away) but this movie.... just plain bad. If you've only seen the first one, let that be where it lives and dies.

Excellent selection - wanted Furiosa but out of stock so I went with:

Also I'll mention (though I didn't buy it here) that The Fall Guy gets crapped on a lot on the internet but it's actually pretty good, has a twist, and should appeal to fans of the Mission Impossible series.

As far as Dune goes, prior to the Black Friday special I wasn't aware there was an HBO series. I finished watching season 1 a couple days ago and it was great and there was news yesterday that it's now available for pre-order.

I think a lot boils down to your setup. So many have a whole cabinet of 1080p Blu-ray movies, and with 4k out, might feel the need to buy that version.
This is a tough one, and to me, comes down to a few things. First, the technical components:
  • Resolution - Yes, it's better. Can you discern it from your seat? It depends on your viewing distance. IF you can achieve a 42*-45* field of view or larger from your seat AND wear your corrective lenses during viewings, then perhaps the resolution will make a difference. A good Criterion or Sony Blu-ray is still fantastic, though.
  • High Dynamic Range - This, IMHO, is the more compelling reason to buy UHDs. The HDR is a significant upgrade, especially if you have a good OLED that can dig deep into the blacks and still do the spectral highlights well. Harder to make the case on a projector for me, although the $20-25k NZ9/900 JVCs do quite well.
  • Audio - Atmos is nice, but I'd agree that it's not a game changer. I like it, but a good AV receiver will do a pretty good job of up-converting 5.1 and 7.1 tracks most of the time.
  • Transfer - As you alluded, this matters. Some of it this is subjective (see: James Cameron), and I would say most UHDs are upgrades (albeit sometimes minimal) to the BDs, but it can (and has) been screwed up in the past.

That said, some of us just do this is a hobby, and just like having the best possible version of a movie. I don't play video games, but have good friends that routinely drop $60/mo on a new game. I buy a few movies instead. Is it more enjoyable to watch Unforgiven in 4k vs. 1080p? Maybe for the first few minutes while I'm thinking about it. Once immersed in the story, I doubt most even pay attention.

Many recent Blu-rays include Atmos or DTS-X audio now. I easily justified upgrading from DVD to Blu-ray, but the upgrade from Blu-ray to 4K is far more debatable. The HDR color is what makes the biggest difference so naturally colorful computer animated movies really benefit. Unless you really love a movie, do you really need to upgrade it to 4K?

If you're rich, as tens of millions of Americans are, especially the bitcoin and Magnificent Seven people who made 7-9 figures because they gambled right 10-15 years ago, then I suppose you could upgrade everything at every new format and still have tens of millions to spare.

If you're not rich, then you're probably like me and you rarely upgrade Blu-ray to 4K. I try to buy 4K for everything I don't already have. Of course physical media is superior to streaming, but a good streaming transfer can be perfectly acceptable to most people.

100% - I'd say higher channel count OR better speakers. If you don't have at least 10% (30% is better) of your surfaces treated with 4-in panels, don't bother with speaker upgrades. I've heard some really great speakers sound terrible in untreated rooms, and some really average speakers sound great in properly treated and set up rooms.

All those folks are likely being led to Kaleidescape by their dealers. They don't want to get up and change a disc (frankly, I don't either but the wife doesn't see it the same way I do).

I did take time to prepare the room with sound absorption and some diffusers. Have have very good speaker placement based on Dolby atmos white paper. Also have pretty decent gear matching.
