Why is the base price so expensive for a "standard" zoom lens? Sorry for the newbie question
These are not mass produced products. They often have lots of parts. Those parts are expensive to make, and gone through a lot of procedures. And they are electronics, too, software for limited production.
After it sells a lot, like tamron 28-75, it could have much lowered price.

The normal price seems to be inflated. It also seems like this lens might be getting discontinued.
A few things:
24-35 isn't much of a zoom range. You might feel surprised at it honestly.
Aperture of F2 is a plus compared to other 'kit' zoom lenses that are 3 or 4.5 f stop. This allows for more light to reach the camera and gives more separation between' the subject and the background. (Shallow depth of field).
This lens will be a bit heavy with the metal build.
This is an incredible deal. If you're unaware, the Art line of lenses is their professional line (the Sport lenses are as well but those are telephoto lenses). The build is very robust and heavy. AF is quick and sharp but may benefit from training if using on a DSLR (w/ USB interface) as opposed to mirrorless. Apparently this one does not have weather sealing which is odd as most in the Art line do (I wish it did but not a deal breaker for me).
The aperture is as good as it gets for a full frame zoom lens. F/2 is a whole stop better than f/2.8. The 28-70mm f/2 made for the new canon RF mount is where it's at but that is in the range of $2,500. The only apprehension you should have on aperature is if you compare to a prime 24mm or 35mm lens which will likely have an aperature of f/1.4 (one stop better than f/2).
The range, though, is unusually narrow. The difference between 24mm and 35mm to the eye isn't a very big one.
The price is FANTASTIC! I buy all my lenses second hand as I can generally get some great saving on well taken care of equipment. I bought my Sigma Art 24-70 f/2.8 for $800-900 used and that was the best deal out at the time (about a year or so ago). A used Sigma Art 35mm f/1.4 will be in the neighborhood of $350-400. Heck, this exact lens is currently over $500 used on MPB (which is a site I frequent for buying used camera equipment. Buying new for a pro grade lens at $400 and have 4 years parts and labor that you don't have to worry about is a no brainer imo. If you bought used and the aperture got stuck, it would probably cost $400 on the repair. Great find OP!

This lens appears to be incorrectly labeled at BestBuy - There is no such 'DC' lens, only 'DG' (as shown in the product photos). DC implies this is a lens for EF-S (cropped sensor), where as this is full frame EF!

This is a premium "Art" series lens, much better quality that kit lenses. Also it's F/2 in entire zoom range, which is quite rare for a zoom lens. It's like have 3 quality prime lenses in one.
24mm + 28mm + 35mm all F/2 (great for low light). The zoom makes it very versatile for landscape + portrait.

typical zoom lens for full frame are variable aperture, then F4, and high end used to be f2.8. F2 is kinda nuts.
