Given the same room/home theater, is it better to have two 12s, or one 16?
Two 12s in almost all cases. The subwoofer interacts with the room WAY more than any other speaker and it's volume will vary a lot depending on location. Two 12's is "additive" so the volume is evened out in most location.
However, if you are prone to measure and tune (put the sub where you sit then move around the room to see where it's loudest, then place the sub there) and willing to always sit in the same spot. The benefits of two go down a bit.
One 16 has WAY more benefit as far as bragging rights though. When company visits, they'll remember that. And they make good end tables.

Sheesh, the dimensions though: 18.89 x 17 x 25.92" (48 x 43.2 x 65.8cm).
Guess the 10" went back up in price, but it's also not that much smaller at 16.64 x 15 x 24.96" (42.3 x 38.1 x 63.4cm).
Anybody have any experience comparing the 10" and 12"? Guessing these will get a lot louder than my SVS SB-1000 since they're large and ported. Thinking of moving the SVS to my desk set up and getting a ported for the HT.
Been watching this deal for a long time.. Finally pulled the trigger after my 20 year old 10" Klipsch died (about 6 months later because I'm indecisive and read a million reviews). I was back and forth between the 10 and 12. Decided on the 12. Impressed is an understatement... Going to need a new roof on my house soon.

I think the 12 will satisfy 95% of households. It goes deep on the frequency range.
Why can't they design these in a reasonably smaller form factor?
as for something that performs good and smaller form factor, look for something that uses passive radiators, or a powerful amp and lots of eq in a sealed enclosure. either way you'll be spending more money, possibly alot more.

Yeah this sub gets low, coming from old school cerwin Vega fronts with no sub. Clarity changed drastically on my fronts with this. Lows now make my fish nervous and me nervous for them
