For those of you waiting on a better deal, be aware that the regular price has gone up from last year (49.99 last year vs 59.99 this year per my notes), so the same price may not happen this year. It might be a few dollars higher. I'm tired of waiting so I am getting it now.
Newegg has had a number of gift card deals in the past few months (example https://slickdeals.net/f/17897070-10-newegg-gift-card-email-delivery-5-via-newegg). I got two of them, totaling two $10 gift cards at $5 a piece. So I spent $10 on the gift cards, plus the $2.49 left over after the code, for a total of $12.49 net in my cost for the software.
I too, am waiting… The price will get lower as the month goes on and into February.

I have no idea how this made front page… This price is mediocre at best…

Once it gets to $15 and below then it may be a slick deal but right now it's just Meh.

Just like FreetaxUSA does when it upsells state yet you constantly advise people to go there.

The good thing is that we can share honest and real information here if we are not interested in pushing someone to a particular product.

I will give you a clue, everybody trying to sell you anything tries to upsell. They want as much from you as possible as you want as much from them as possible. That is true of your neighbor selling a car all the way to to Apple and Tesla. Everybody upsells. It is kind of the nature of humans and capitalism that has that ugly side yet on the other side has been a miracle that has lifted and improved the lives of billions.

If I carried anger, rage and a chip on my shoulder about all that I would even be angry at family, boss, wife and kids constantly as they have upsold me some things that turned out to be not what i quite expected. Most everybody I run into does it. I have hired workers that are useless. I have had tax guys and tradesman that were incompetent and some crooked. We live in a fallen world if you have not noticed.

That doesn't mean we have to rage about injustice. It means we have to understand that human playing field and rationally still find value where we can in any given transaction, product or person.

If I jump from Block to FreetaxUSA or TT in a huff I may find jumped from the frying pan to the fire or at least get the pretty much the same heat of modest disappointment at either place. If I give up on my wife and jump to some other in a emotional tantrum I will find another set of things that may not suit me and can continue my rage. Being in a huff as to the injustice of it all doesn't make for a clear mind or rational decisions. Anger and resentment does not make for a healthy mind and that impacts even our bodies. You sell on us on taking up of rage and disgust about moderately minor stuff that will literally harm body and mind. iI that is all you have to offer I think I will pass as I just want to get my taxes done with a minimum of cost, effort and emotion.

I'm getting old and have no time or energy for vendettas for small stuff or even big. Block as company does not totally thrill me but neither does TT or Freetax yet I am grateful that they are there as I have many options available to find the value that suits me even if none give me all I want.
FreeTaxUSA is crystal clear about their pricing - right on the front page a clear price for state filing. Block tells you that you need premium when you deluxe is just fine (as you have noted many times). Not to mention people are constantly confused by the included software download vs state e-file fee. And the whole online vs download versions having different features. Yep, totally the same. Intuit is actually just like Block though with all the exact same deceptive marketing.

1. For scenario of independent contractor, single-owner LLC, home office itemized deductions (for that LLC) would HRB Premium offer more help?

2. Is HRB no longer offering physical install disks?

Thanks.

FYI after being stubborn for years I finally made the switch from turbotax to freetaxusa. For some reason I was concerned about the import of a turbotax file, but I shouldn't have been. You import a PDF of your prior years tax return, and it does the rest. The online software is no easier or harder than turbotax/hr block. It's completely free, but is $15 for me to efile state. Would be free state if I don't want to efile. So $15 total. TurboTax was $35 (when found at the cheapest) + $15 to efile state.

Make the switch if you haven't already
Does anybody know if freetaxusa can do more complicated stuff, like backdoor ROTH IRA contribution?
In the past I used TurboTax Deluxe to do that, and it's "holding my hands" through the whole process. If freetaxusa can do that too, I'll switch.

Turbo Tax has been advertising free filing with their app if you didn't use them last year, with all forms supported. Has anyone checked to see if it's any good?

Hopefully the tax preparation software industry will get the message and bring down the price of the tax preparation software packages back down to earth or at least throw in much more tax preparation useful and helpful advice that might be considered value added such as in artificial intelligence tax based advice to explain the more complex tax preparation education concepts behind the underlying tax theory in practice

I'm waiting for pricing to get a little better, but also waiting for a stoppage in reviews that say download codes don't work.
I got an error with the download code when I cut and pasted it in. I erased that, and manually entered the 10 digit code, and it worked fine.

How does this compare to turbo tax, and is it compatible with previous years?

The Schedule E stuff gets more expansive and in depth and I only screen capped the first section. ]
Thanks for the info on Schedule E. Can you e-file if your return has Schedule E?

(sorry - never efiled before but considering it this year.)

I ask because https://www.hrblock.com/tax-cente...ee-e-file/ has this statement:
"What IRS forms cannot be e-filed beyond a certain number?
In certain cases, you will be prevented from e-filing due to the number of forms that you need to file. You will not be able to e-file if you have:

Eight Schedules C
1 Schedule E..."
Thank you!!!

Does the Deluxe version fill out Schedule C and other self-employment forms like 8829 (home office) and 7206 (health insurance deduction)? Or do you need to fill out each of these forms manually? I don't need extensive hand-holding questionnaires for business deductions, but I don't want to have to enter each form field manually on these forms.

Years ago I used Deluxe for my business without difficulty, but I don't know if any functionality was removed. I would buy the Premium version if it would save a lot of time for the business forms.

As someone who has used many tax software / services (Turbo Tax, HR Block, Tax Slayer / various free tax services), and even worked as a tax preparer while in college, I always buy and use H&R Block tax software to do my taxes.

Here are the reasons why I use it:

1) it's fairly accurate, and easy to use, and the price is a no-brainer

2) It's reliable software you can save and use on your PC for many years. I have used past HR Block tax software to file amended returns when I received corrected 1099's or other documents after I have filed, sometimes got a corrected 1099 several months after filing.

3) Turbo Tax holds your hands more, but I was turned off from Turbo Tax when they try to introduce DRM technology for their software. As a result, I have boycotted Turbo Tax, and saved more money just buying HR Block Tax software.

4) Since this is not cloud based, you have all of the raw data / files for your own archives, which can be very useful for future reference.

I used to wait until February / March to buy, just to save a few bucks. Nowadays, my time is too valuable, and I'm going to buy this now, because I can get started on the tax file and enter the various investment information details, and other deductions, rather than wait til February or March like usual.

You might save a few bucks more if you wait, but is it worth your time to wait so long to start your tax file? I think this is good enough to buy now.

From what I recall it was able to, but just to be safe maybe spend a few more bucks for Premium.
