That's what I was wondering -- the specs on this seem to be pretty solid, especially so for a new machine. The M3 MBP seems to be slowly phased out, as the M4 chips are replacing it.

The downvotes? Maybe because it's last-gen, maybe because it's B&H and they aren't the friendliest with laptop returns, maybe it's because the voters don't like apple? It's hard to tell.

But 36gb/1tb M3 Pro 14" is a machine that'll hold up exceedingly well. The not-quite-comparable 15" M3 Air with 24gb/1tb is like $1900 ($1700 for the 13" version). I'd strongly argue it's worth the extra $100/$300 for the upgrade to the Pro chip + extra ram + better screen.

The Macbook Pro M4 Pro with 24gb and 1tb is $2400. To get ~32gb ram, you need to bump up to a M4 Max or down to a M4 (non-pro/non-max). The cheapest of those options is $2200 for a 14" M4 32gb/1tb, and it goes up to $3200 for 14" M4 Max 36gb/1tb.

So this isn't bad. It's not as maxed out as some previous Woot offerings of a 14"/16" M1 Max with 36-64gb of ram and 4tb-8tb storage, but those were refurb/open box AND from Woot -- so talk about a major OOF of a dice roll.
Good points all around.

It's just that the M4 (non-pro) generally outperforms the M3 Pro and crushes it on AI compute. Plus the new MBP has a bunch of upgrades beyond the processor - better screen, webcam, ports, and more.

For those willing to deal with an external drive, max value is a base M4 Pro MBP for $1700/$1800 and spend $200 on a 4GB SSD.
This seems like a good deal and decent specs. Am I missing something because I don't get the downvotes?

It's just that the M4 (non-pro) generally outperforms the M3 Pro and crushes it on AI compute. Plus the new MBP has a bunch of upgrades beyond the processor - better screen, webcam, ports, and more.

For those willing to deal with an external drive, max value is a base M4 Pro MBP for $1700/$1800 and spend $200 on a 4GB SSD.

I agree. The base M4 Pro MBP (24/512GB) for $1699 was a better deal, even at the frequent $1799 when it goes on sale. If you must have 1TB disk space, $150 more (than this posted deal) can get you a M4 Pro MBP (24GB/1TB) with more cores (14 CPU/20 GPU) at Costco.

Somewhat true.

Yes, the M4 (base) is better than the M3 Pro. The screen is the same since M1, just software unlocked. The webcam is better due to ultrawide and Center Stage, but the M3 Pro was great. The TB5 ports only come in the M4 Pro, not the M4.

M3 Pro still beats M4 (non-Pro) in a lot of areas, specifically anything GPU related

Yeah, true, GPU is slightly better on the M3 Pro, though AI compute is more than 2x better on the M4 so depends on use case.

Would you say the $1249 M3 Pro MBP from Costco was a better deal than the $1399 M4 MBP?

I'm personally torn

Absolutely, unless you need the additional ram or SSD space (you may) the Costco deal is definitely better. Most probably don't need more than 16gb of ram. The Costco one is still technically live via BB pricematch

I would also bet the m4 deal is better because the m4 will be better for most vs the m3pro (and $600 cheaper)

Both are gonna be great machines and killer value at that price point. I'd take the M4 because for me the webcam and AI compute gains will make a noticeable difference, particularly as the machine ages. If budget is primary, can't go wrong with the M3 Pro.
