I found the animated series to be surprisingly great, having watched it for the first time a few years ago and a second rewatch last year. The animation isn't amazing by any standard, but the stories are solid. Highly recommended.

watched these as a kid, they really were like a fourth season of the original series. the stories had tighter pacing due to the cost of animation , but could do things only possible with animation. the music is star Trekish possibly due to rights. but probably cemented the trek style started by A. Courage.

Love these. Recall as a kid in the mid 70s I would catch them as a rerun on Saturdays but very rarely and never knew when they regularly aired

When they were finally release, I think in the 90s , they were only on LaserDisc (which I didnt own a player) and VHS, I bought the VHS little by little to watch all of them and then I think resold them on eBay. Only to rebuy the DVD set when it finally came out. Which I still own. But now these are on Paramount Plus.

After having a finite number of episodes for TOS, these were a joy to find to get more Trek with Shatner and Nimoy and Doohan and Uhura and Sulu etc

Animation is super cheesy , in the style of the Superfriends and funny to watch them reuse the same stills over and over

Yesteryear was great and I wish they brought Thelin back into the genre somehow. It was nice to see Lower Decks incorporate the TAS Orions in its final season...

When I was a kid, these were on Nickelodeon. My first exposure to Star Trek, and they were great... maybe reused a lot of speaking panels, but don't remember it bothering me that much

Not so great but salvaged by having the original voices. In that way, it's somewhat discovering a treasure vault of the original characters.
It's infinitely better than ALL of the re-boot StarTrek animated re-boot series.

Anyone Remember,

When they played these along with all those other cartoons? If I recall correctly there were shows like Gilligans Island, M-U-S-H, maybe five or six others inuding Star Trek.
Problem was you never knew what cartoon you were going to get? Kids today boy. Spoiled rotten. LOL!!!

If you want a taste of Next Generation and Voyager done in the style of the original animated series, see below:

And check out "Star Trek Continues" if you want live action "original" Trek. Very well done.

They are a treasure considering the time they were released and the fact that any die hard Trekkie gets a few more stories with the regular crew despite the real series being limited to 3 seasons. Some of the episodes even had the same writers.

Yeah, this is kind of explains why when I was a kid I only encoutered this on Saturday mornings once in a while....Not in 73 when they were released (I was too young ) but a few years later in syndication. I was psyched in the early 2000s when I could buy all the VHS tapes on Amazon (before they were released as a DVD set)

All great points. What if they redid all the animation and kept the voices?

The new stuff (e.g. StarTrek Prodigy) has incredible sound and animation but absolutely horrific scripts, characters and story lines. The only thing enjoyable about it is Captain Janeway. But I suppose the new generation of kids wouldn't be interested in the old scripts. The only ones that would be benefit from redoing that animation would be the classic Trek fans. I think I answered my own question.
