Binding of Isaac is the original base game that is superb, but lacks a lot of great content added later.

Binding of Isaac: Rebirth is the current base game. And then there are DLCs: Afterbirth, Afterbirth+, Repentance.

Out of all rogue-likes out there, I think, I played Isaac the most.

I did some research on this game and there is a ton of DLC, some of which (from what I understand) is almost required... It got too confusing honestly.

A friend bought me a copy of this years ago. Imagine a dark twisted version of smash tv that is rogue like.

I think I just showed my age.

This looks like its for the "Flash" version. While its fun, its quite dated. Rebirth is the current version with DLCs.
This version is a good entry point if you're curious and don't want to pay too much. I cannot recommend Rebirth+DLCs enough if roguelites are your jam

I have 1600+ hours on Binding of Issac Reburth it and still play it on a regular basis, it's a rouge game so lots of dying and repeating but the rooms change layout and plenty of different enemies and bosses. This is the OG and I recommend it since I probably put 700 hours into the first one and while still has a bunch of enemies and items it's not nearly as big as rebirth.

Can you give a cliff notes version of the improvements between the different dlc (I own 2 and don't even know the actual difference between each)?

I've played this game religiously for the last 8 years. Amazing game with endless possibilities. The only DLC you need to buy is the Repentance DLC. The updated Repentance Plus is free but still in hits beta stages.

I could never get the steam deck to play this game due to control issues. So you might want to go with rebirth, just another reason.

The majority, if not all, dlc is for the updated non-flash version rebirth. I believe the flash game was somewhat laggy or had compatibility issues so this game was remade completely and that is the rebirth version. Almost everything referring to binding of Isaac is referencing the rebirth version which has been adding and expanding content and DLCs for years now. This might be good as a trial type experience but I'd say this version is basically obsolete or deprecated and rebirth is what you should get.
