Distilled is probably optional, but I use it.
You can also use it to flush on demand hot water heaters. Those concentrated solutions are $20 at the hardware are just as obscenely overpriced.

Also, I found liquid descaler in the Dollar Tree for $1.25/bottle. SDS sheets lists ingredients identical to Urnex or similar.

Don't forget running a dishwasher cycle with citric acid to clean it. Also your washing machine.
How much do you use and how do you use it? Mix with water?

Vinegar is very good for removing lime scale. But it will deteriorate rubber seals and some metals. Also some boilers might absorb the odor / taste of vinegar. Also vinegar contains no surfactants to remove coffee residue. I would stick to urnex dezcal or citric acid.

For a Moccamaster drip maker I use 3 full tablespoons dissolved in about a quart of warm water. Pour it in. Start the coffee maker let half brew through and shut it off for 30 minutes. Let the remainder brew through and flush with 2-3 carafes of fresh water.
