Legendary is the base game with the 3 DLC. Special Edition upgrades to a new 64-bit engine and enhanced graphics. Anniversary Edition is Special Edition plus Creation Club content, fishing, and aquariums.
There's also a VR Edition, and a Very Special Edition for Alexa, etch-a-sketch, pagers, and smart refrigerators.
I used to live a productive life, til I took a great bargain to the knee
So let's pretend that I am someone who has somehow never played Skyrim, because for various reasons the only version available to me for many years was the infamously terrible PS3 port.

Can someone ELI5 what separates the Skyrim Special Edition from the Anniversary Edition from the "Legendary" Edition?

I'm gonna be that guy.

I've bought this game probably on 6 different occasions and every time, after 2 hours, I'm done.

Guess it just didn't land for me, even tho I know it's one of the greatest of all time.
? You actually mean you bought this game 6x and loaded it up with mods each time and played it for only two hours? I can't imagine that. Yes, it's not nearly as cool without the mods. This game has to have more mods than any other I have seen, including Half Life.

I don't know either. I have to FORCE myself to last 6 hours into the play through and just couldn't take any more. The combat was so horrible and I felt lost at every moment.*

*At the very very very end of my play time I did stumble onto a spell that pointed to the route to your objective....which would have been super helpful to have known at the very beginning of the playthrough. Thanks game Devs for not pointing out the important stuff Wink
The lack of hand holding was off putting. My friends played it before me and nudged me. Basically I did too many side missions so they asked I was doing only side missions and then told me how to identify main missions and recommended doing some of them. One other off putting thing at a high level I was either way over powered and one shot kills or surprised by some missions that scaled with my level where I was one shot killed. You can use your log book and mark spots on the map. As for dungeons there is a pattern I didn't notice until the mods didn't follow the pattern.

I saw the original Star Wars trilogy like 20+ years after it first came out and loved it. Can't relate at all.

Thumbs down to you for bashing the only Star Wars Trilogy that matters🤣🤣🤣
Haha it doesn't mean I can't appreciate the significance and the impact the original trilogy had on its franchise, genre, and even on the entire movie/cinema industry. While I thoroughly enjoy the franchise, I just was not as entertained by the original. My friend, on the other hand, pretty much memorized all the lines.

As with everything, it may not be up your alley. no matter how much praise a game gets but I would say that this game much like fallout games the first 10 hours is slow and can be tedious depending on what you decide to follow/do. IMO the game really doesn't open up until you are like level 11-13 since you are generally strong enough to go off exploring without constantly dying quickly.

At this point, I think there's more people who own some version of Skyrim than those who don't.

Special Edition is the base game. You can buy Anniversary Upgrade for DLC or you can simply buy the Anniversary Edition which will include the Anniversary DLC.I don't see any Legendary Edition, at least not on Steam?
Hypothetically, that may be the exact same reason why I may have never played it either 🤣

I have never played Skyrim without mods, even though I have racked up a lot of hours. I love that you can use mods to turn Skyrim into basically any kind of game you want to, and you can make it as difficult as you want as well. It's certainly a learning curve if you really want to get into modding, but it's fun.

I think I played too much Oblivion, I just couldn't really find a groove in this game. Bought my son a copy though, he'll get his steam account this year on his birthday...been slowly loading it up. Thanks for the deal!
I tried playing Oblivion after Skyrim to get some backstory. I played for a while, but gave up since the vanilla leveling system seems to encourage you to min-max your skills and can make gameplay awkward. Like, you could gain more skill points if you focused on a fewer set of skills for each level.
Ohh, some bad guys to fight. Better not cause I might accidentally get a point in archery, and I'm trying to maximize my walking skill on this level.
Luckily Skyrim uses a different leveling system.

If using newer mods, you'll want the Anniversary upgrade for $10 on sale.

From a review. . .

Bethesda's business model:
1. Release update which breaks all mods.
2. Charge for update for future mods.

It took me a while to get into it tbh. The combat in particular seems awful at first, compared to anything else

They might be dated, but if you want actual 90s graphics, look at Daggerfall. Which at the time had pretty sweet graphics. Morrowind (early 2000s) took it to a new level, but obviously looks dated today.

I was looking at this link on steam, and it didn't show me as owning skyrim at all and I was pretty sure I had purchased this in the past. And sure enough, I checked my steam library and its there, just titled "The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim" but when you go to the store page from my game library it says
"Notice: At the request of the publisher, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is unlisted on the Steam store and will not appear in search.".

So did they do this to just try and rebadge the game to sell more copies? Also, when I look for dlc on my game library page it only shows the soundtrack available for dlc.

After reading negative reviews on my owned version of this in steam I have found the answer. Bethesda removed all dlc from the store for the vanilla version to force players to buy the "special edition. Other reviews said they were also making people pay for mods instead of people using the free mods for the older version. I used to just buy games when on sale, with the intent of playing them eventually but most times never do, I am more of a collector I guess. I have ran across other games in my Steam library that say the publisher removed them for sale like, poker night 2, game of thrones, back to the future. I didn't know about this one though.
