Also it has a one year warranty, but to obtain warranty service you must ship it back to them at your cost. I imagine that would be expensive being it weighs ten pounds.

For anyone concerned about reliability/longevity, the JNC 660 is what most AAA drivers seem to carry when they come jump start your vehicle.

Any deals on the capacitor-based jump starters that don't have an internal lithium battery?
I'd rather avoid having a battery altogether.

So can this pack still charge the caps if the internal battery is damaged or dead???? A little confusing since caps can charge on the low battery and jump the vehicle. Someone with expertise please chime in.

Based on the description, no.
I'm also looking for a deal on a capacitor jump starter that charges off the mostly-dead car battery, rather than using an internal lithium battery.
Internal batteries need to be periodically charged, and wear out over time.
The capacitor based jump starters that charge off the car battery should last indefinitely without any periodic charging required.

Edit: this one does support charging the caps off the nearly-dead battery, the internal lithium battery is a backup in case the car battery is too low. Thanks CoolThread608!

From the website, I think it can. This is from the Clore website.
"In most cases, the jump starter can be charged up using the battery from the disabled vehicle. But, they incorporate an internal reserve power lithium battery to charge the ultracapacitor when the disabled vehicle's battery is extremely discharged, which prevents using it to charge the unit. The units feature a LED Status gauge to indicate the readiness of the reserve power battery, allowing you to always know its ability to perform a jump start."

Caveat emptor. There's a reason these capacitor based models are so cheap. I looked into these on a similarly steep discount a few months ago and chose not to buy due to the many reports of premature failure.

Got this Schumacher battery-less jump starter [amazon.com] from a deal posted here back in 2019 for $32. I've used it to jump passenger cars. It can't jump start a completely dead battery though.

Here's a comparison between the JNC8550 and JNC660 jump starters based on the information available:

Power and Performance:
JNC8550: This model uses ultracapacitor technology, offering 550 Start Assist Amps. It's designed to work effectively in various temperatures, providing consistent performance even in cold conditions down to -40°F. Its design allows it to be charged from the disabled vehicle's battery under most circumstances, with an internal lithium battery for backup charging when the vehicle's battery is too discharged.

JNC660: It delivers a more substantial 1700 Peak Amps and 425 Cranking Amps, making it suitable for a wider range of vehicles, including those requiring higher power for starting. It uses a Clore PROFORMER battery, which is specifically designed for jump starting, offering exceptional power and the ability to handle multiple jump starts per charge.

Design and Build:
JNC8550: Has a more compact and portable design with 46" #4 AWG cables. It includes LED status indicators for checking the readiness of the internal reserve power battery. It's noted for its ease of use and includes both a wall charger and a 12V charging cord.

JNC660: Also features 46" cables but of #2 AWG welding cable leads, designed for professional use. It's praised for its durability, simplicity, and long-term reliability. The unit does not have an on/off switch, which some users might prefer for constant readiness.

Battery and Charging:
JNC8550: Utilizes an ultracapacitor with a backup lithium battery for charging when the vehicle's battery is too weak. This setup is less susceptible to cold but requires less frequent use of the backup battery.

JNC660: Contains a replaceable Clore PROFORMER lead-acid battery, known for retaining charge over long periods. It has an automatic recharging circuit but lacks some of the safety features like an on/off switch found in newer models.

Use Case:
JNC8550: Ideal for users needing a reliable, high-performance jump starter in various temperatures, especially those concerned with cold weather performance without the need for a traditional battery.

JNC660: Suited for automotive professionals or enthusiasts who need a robust, long-lasting jump starter for a variety of vehicles, including larger ones that might require higher cranking power. It's the choice for those who prefer traditional battery technology and might require multiple jump starts per charge.

In summary, the JNC8550 offers unique ultracapacitor technology for cold weather reliability and ease of use with less maintenance, while the JNC660 provides higher peak power, traditional battery reliability, and is favored in professional automotive settings for its durability and power.
