Why are you saying this? It's the opposite, they are selling overstocked motherboards and memory by bundling them with a highly sought after CPU
The 299 bundle is great place to start a new build. A 4060/7700 XT (or even a 4070) would be a great pairing for a pretty sick sub-1000 PC
What?? They are doing this because the 9800x3d is selling like hotcakes and they can get rid of crappy MOBOs and RAM kits by bundling it to customers who dont know what they're buying

But now I'm wondering: depending on when the Santa Clara store opens, would the 7700X still be a good move? Considering that bundle was $370 back in late April of 2023

For $30 more, I'm not sure if the 9700X is worth it

FYI, I tend to keep my PC hardware as-is for a long time (hence the 8 year old CPU and GPU, lol)
If you don't have microcenter, you can get a used 7700 (non x) off aliexpress for $170. And whatever board, and upgrade today. The only difference with the X, is it can't be overclocked to 5750mhz easily on pbo, It's capped to 5550. You can hit 5750 if you change the base clock, if that really matters to you.

For gaming, only need strong CPU if playing at super high refresh rate 1080P.

I was using a 4090 with a i5-11400 (before making new build with 7950X3D) and while there was definitely a bottleneck, games were still playable and gorgeous at 4k.
Precisely, 9800x3d paired with a 4090 is great. If you stick it with a $500-600 gpu, it way underperforms a 7700x + $800-900 gpu.

At 1440p and 4K, you will always be upgrading the GPU, the 7700x will never bottleneck the game outside of Ultra-Low graphics esports games.

Yes, higher resolution, the more your GPU matters. The lower the resolution, the more the CPU matters.

But you're missing out what the x3D specifically gives, higher 1% lows for FPS for all resolutions. That makes a major major difference in felt gameplay. That's why I recommend a gamer to get the x3D for that purpose.
The lower the resolution, the higher the FPS given a faster CPU.

For someone who is competitively playing esports at ultra low settings, you can argue, it MATTERS.

At 720p, the difference between the 9700x and 9800x3d, The x3d is only 16% faster. That's the difference between 300fps and 350fps. Does this matter to most people at 1440p 2160p, where the 9800x3d is only 7.5% and 2.5% faster respectively? You can cite specific cases, but you must play those games alot to justify the hype inflated prices.

When people play normal games at 1440 and 2160, a Faster GPU with a 7700/9700x will be significantly faster than splitting the price difference on the 9800x3d.

9800x3d is a fantastic cpu, but the inflated prices make it terrible in terms of price to performance ratio. If you're spending $2000, go for it. $1500, it's a difficult decision, but a 7700/9700x build with a faster GPU will outperform a 9800x3d build by 20-30% easily.

That is Not a valid argument.

At 1080p, the 9800x3d is 14% faster in 1% lows.

At 4K, it's 2% faster in 1% lows.

That is only WITH a 4090.
If you have anything other than a 4090. Your 1% lows with a slower gpu + a 9800x3d will be significantly LOWER than a 7700x + Faster Gpu.

The cpu is not itself entirely responsible for 1% lows.

The difference between an $800 and $500 gpu is significantly more than 30%, in 1% lows. Upwards of 35-50% anywhere between 1080p and 4K..

Noob question - if I have a Dell XPS with a 3rd generation i7 and I just want to upgrade the MB/CPU - can I buy one of these bundles and take the PS, video card, wifi card, heat sink, etc and swap it over?

I know it won't be top tier performance but for what I need it will work and it will give me a processor that I can run Win 11 on

9800X3D is sold out most other locations (Amazon, etc) and this will continue for at least until March.

Those sets are "value meals"?

They always offer bundles, and their bundles are usually solid deals. It does help them sell items as well.

Bought this bundle for $688 last year before tax. Very happy with base motherboard no problems at all. I run it with a 4080 super and it's great. Make sure to update firmware for motherboard

Depends if those components are proprietary parts. If they are not then you can swap them over.

trying to get rid of faulty mobo
False. One example, the B650 Gigabyte Aorus Elite AX Ice is a solid motherboard at that bundled price. Not all the mobo's are something I'd pick on sale, but in the B650 family, you could do loads worse that the Elite AX in that bundle.

Also, consider your logic. These are IN-STORE sales... you think MC is looking to jam themselves up with mostly LOCALS who walk in to buy this and get stiffed with 'faulty motherboards'? You think they wouldn't get buried in returns and lose repeat/future customers? That would be a VERY poor strategy. But believe what you want. It doesn't make it true. :-D

cpubenchmark shows only a 6% difference between Ryzen 9700X and 9800X3D. Does the 9800X3D actually offer something significantly better that is not reflected in that 6%?
