FYI: Soldered RAM. Heading into 2025 with soldered ram in a 1k gaming/productivity laptop doesnt make a lot of sense.

This looks like a decent 14" gaming laptop with a QHD screen and an adequately powered 4070 GPU. If you're not gaming, you can achieve decent battery life around 8 hours with this laptop using the integrated graphics from the Intel Core Ultra 177H (Meteor Lake) which has pretty good power and energy efficiency. Not the best CPU for heavy multi-core workloads, but fine for gaming, streaming, web browsing and productivity.

Review:
https://www.tomshardware.com/lapt...-14-review
  • The reviewer likes the color and resolution of the screen, but wishes it was brighter than 350 nits. They have benchmarks showing FPS for various games and say that the 4070 is quite capable playing games on the QHD screen.
  • The review says that the laptop remains quiet, but does get fairly hot. It is unimpressed with the keyboard but thinks the trackpad is good.
  • For upgrades, the M.2 2280 PCI Express 4.0 SSD, M.2 2230 wireless card, and battery pack are all upgradeable. However, the LPDDR5X RAM is soldered down. It's also somewhat hard to open the laptop for upgrades.
In my opinion this is a solid 4070 gaming laptop if you need one now. I would personally wait for deals like this with an Intel Core Ultra 2XX CPU (Lunar Lake) which brings better integrated graphics and energy efficiency (battery life) but who knows when we will see gaming laptops with those CPUs around this price point.

This CPU is less powerful than the ai 365 and less energy efficient then the lunar lake CPU laptops. I also haven't seen a laptop with a 4070 GPU with either of those two CPUs for under $1200 yet.

This will likely be fine unless you know that you will need more than 16GB RAM or know that you have demanding multi-core CPU workloads.

Yeah, unfortunately waiting for the next thing only gets you in the position of waiting for the next thing after that. If the next thing comes with something that one really needs, then i get it, but chasing specs puts you in a never ending waiting game. Personally, i need more gpu ram so I'll have to wait for that.

My thoughts from a similar Acer gaming laptop...I have a Triton 14 and I love it overall. Great performance for around $900 and 4 lbs, hard to beat it! It does run hot and I think my next gaming laptop will have a 16" screen instead of 14". Soldered RAM isn't the best but you can't have everything. Runs all the games I throw at it! Cheap, fast, and good. Pick 2.

If this was 32gb of RAM it'd be great. If you're playing modern titles on Windows 11 you're going to always be bumping up against that 16gb

What's the deal? To buy a new model with 32 gb RAM next year? To burn another $1000.

Since it has a video card, probably 70% tdp, it has a power brick. Any specs on the power brick?

Where does it say soldered ram? I need a new laptop, liked this model in general but trying to avoid soldered, and they seem sneaky about that stuff.
