It encourages you to use whole milk for the ice cream and the consistency depends on how frozen it is. My deep freezer though is drastically colder than my fridge freezer so it's the difference between "great soft serve" and "gotta let it thaw a bit before trying to mix it" soft serve. I think personally the biggest issue I'm running into is finding the right vanilla flavor profile. I've tried a few from the store and just can't get that vanilla I'm used to. I may try vanilla bean next time.Chocolate? Truly can't mess it up.With all that typed though....it's much easier to just get ice cream from the store as many times we forget we have some premade ones in the deep freezer and boom - we now have a carton from the store.
I would say the ice cream is more of a Philly style ice cream, which is made without eggs. I'm used to that, so I like the full fat version of the ice cream. adding a little pudding mix to the base recipe helps the texture, but I don't typically do that. I've really made a lot of pineapple ice cream by simply putting a can of sliced pineapple chunks in full syrup (the sugar in the syrup helps with the consistency of the ice cream), freezing and then spinning on lite cycle. It's a great snack and you are eating fruit! (yes, i know, the syrup isn't the healthy-ist option, but it does taste good!.

I'm really into soft serve at the moment. I am planning to get a commercial stand alone machine, would something like this satisfy my soft serve cravings?
The Cuisinart soft serve machine would bang that out for you. They can sometimes be found well under MSRP.

Bought one during the last time these were on woot in November. My unit won't turn on unless you unplug it and plug it back in. There is a big Reddit thread about a lot of brand new machines doing this and people returning them, only to get another new unit that does the same thing. A lot of these refurbs might be units with this issue like mine was.
I have this issue with a November Woot refurb, but not a big deal leaving it unplugged until I need to use it. Everything arrived in perfect shape minus the retail box and recipe guide.

There is no magnet to hold the blade in the lid, but a couple tips for those worried about durability:
  1. Wait at least 45m after pulling the tub from the freezer to soften the ice block.
  2. Shave the surface ice to be as level as possible. For whatever reason the recipes tend to freeze with a hump in the middle that can stress the blade's axle.
Awesome price and well worth $90 IMO.

Do you have a recipe for this? I would love to lose 20 lb eating ice cream every night.

Recipes for this can be scattered all over highly recommend using a recipe organizer app. And let it scrape import when you find one to try.

I do have to unplug mine before use each time, but I thought my outlet might be wonky so thanks for solving that mystery for me Smilie

Other than that issue, which isn't really an issue for me unless plugging it back in it stops working, we really like ours.

If you have been thinking about buying one of these don't pass this up. I have bought quite a few refurb items from Woot, and haven't had a problem with any of them.

Just use a smart plug and turn it off after you are done. Then it will think it's been unplugged.

LOL the ice cream makers with compressors are generally $250+ for quality ones like Whynter
I don't get when you would get this over a$30 normal ice cream maker that makes it right away not overnight
