Got that. I wear them in the winter as long johns when its in the 20's here. I'm too old to wear them as an outer layer in the summer..lol.

That's what he's saying, you want cold gear to keep you warm and hot gear to keep you cold, if you purchased these as winter garments to keep you warm you would be doing the opposite of your intentions.

Are these supposed to be worn as-is without shorts over them? Women obviously wear leggings without other garments over them. And these are called leggings.

Help with the logic!

No, these would be your 'base' layer. Nothing under them and then wear something over them.

The Cold vs Heat gear can get confusing. I use the heat gear stuff in the winter as well, it is just a thin layer for me. The cold gear stuff is definitely much warmer, but I don't like a thick layer.

So are these for the days when it's too cold to just wear shorts alone?

I think all of you are being too hung up on heat/cold marketing by UA. Regardless of naming convention, this baselayer during winter time under your pants will provide extra warmth. A layer is a layer. It's not a battery powered AC unit.
