Pepsi is the best battery terminal cleaner. All of these canned cleaners are a wast of money. Follow up with bearing grease and you will never have another problem with corrosion.

This works because Coke has phosphoric acid in it, which acts as a base against the alkalinity in lead acid batteries. A better solution would be vinegar or even better than that would be baking soda in water, which is a weaker base solution. And will arguably work better than either the two previously mentioned against the alkalinity and battery acid.

Have you checked the price of Coke/Pepsi lately? This terminal cleaner is much cheaper in the long run. The best solution is not letting it happen in the first place. WD-40 or similar works well because it gets into areas where grease can't, like the where the bare copper of the battery wires are clamped into the terminal connector, plus it's less messy. In over 40 years of using it, it hasn't failed yet.

Yep, ever since I watched Coke solve the mystery of the 10-year-old Waverunner That Wouldn't Start, I've been a convert. A little WD (or grease) to stave off future problems. Grease gets a little messy, though. White spray-on lithium grease isn't quite as bad.

Coke works to but it doesn't seem as acidic.

Anything that keeps oxygen off the terminals. I haven't tried lithium spray grease but it would be cleaner.

+100 on toothbrush plus baking soda.
Once battery cleaned, well rinsed, and dried, use wire brush, or better yet this cleaning tool to quickly get bare metal on the battery post and terminal.

I used to add grease, but now just make this cleaning an annual ritual *before* each winter. Works for me.

The most acidic pop is Mt. Dew.

Grew up in the car business & as a kid in the '50s was taught to use baking soda & H20. I also would put petroleum jelly on the terminals/cables afterwards. Good price/easy to use, OP. Repped.

I live in the Seattle area.
Never used any sort of terminal cleaner, terminals always look good. Batteries typically last 7-10yrs.

Have owned, or maintained for friends/family: Several of each type: Nissan, Toyota, Ford, Acura, Honda... either mid-sized cars or basic SUV.

I'm guessing it's a lot to do with enviroment?

I have the gel version of these, and I can definitely say they work 100%. Last time I changed my battery, I noticed very heavy corrosion on the cables. After asking around a few folks and YouTube, I cleaned out the cables using baking soda + distilled water mixture; then applied some dielectric grease and NOCO red gel to the terminals. There is zero new corrosion since then, and its been about 2 years.

That said, next time I replace the battery, I will likely try to see if I can find an "AGM" version of the battery as those are less prone to any corrosion.
