Ugh just bought the one on eBay yesterday. This one seems like a better deal. Does anyone have any opinions on this version?

I also bought the eBay one. Mine definitely looks used; scuffs on the bottom, SN sticker looks rough, and the screen has artifacts (though it may have been because the unit was cold and they may have gone away by now...it's in a closet and I don't look at it). It's probably fine, but I was certainly hoping for one of those refurbs that looks new. I'm not worried about the unit itself because LFP batteries are more robust than other Li-ion chemistries, and the 2-year warranty should cover it if there's an issue.

That being said, I agree that the one in this thread is a better buy if you want/need the solar panels. I got mine for the sole purpose as a UPS for my internet modem, wireless router, and SmartThings; I already have whole-house solar and I'm not taking the unit with me anywhere. I just don't have any use for the solar panels.

Furthermore, the EcoFlow solar panel included with the River 3:
  1. requires an adapter (if one exists) to use them with anything other than EcoFlow power stations,
  2. is generally considered to be slower than advertised, and
  3. is labeled as being IPX68 waterproof (immersion) and yet the warranty on them doesn't cover water damage.
After tax, the difference is around $80. I understand that you can't directly compare a refurb vs new, but I don't (personally) think the difference in the two is that much, especially since the new units are being sold on Amazon by EcoFlow and returns/warranty claims are going to be a PITA no matter what. Resale on the panels - if you don't want/need them - is probably only about $60 since they have gone on sale for less in the not-too-distant past, so (in my mind), you're paying an extra $20 for a new unit vs refurb. That's about right given the same warranty coverage on new vs refurb.

I might have jumped on this if I didn't get the refurb, with the goal of finding someone to buy the panels for $70-80, but I don't really have a taste for selling things on FB or Craigslist anymore. It's rarely worth the hassle.

The 45w panel can be picked up for around $55 if you watch for sales/coupons. So I'd just pick up a solar panel when you see it go on sale. The "refurbished" items are most often unused returns. The River 3 is a nice little unit. If you got the EBay deal you should be really happy with it.

They don't start charging until you have about 40 W so if you have a 45 white panel it's not getting 100% it won't charge the unit

My panels broke after 3 months of daily use, if you plan to move it around fold/unfolding it then it's boudn to break pretty fast. Otherwise get a rigid panel and a XT60i cable (can be had around $10 on ebay when on sale).

You think there is anything to do to help prolong the life of the hinged areas to prevent them from breaking? Once they broke was the panel useless because some wires tore too?

Once the any of the panels have issues, all of them stops working. I think the only way to prevent it is to mount it on something flat and keep it there. I don't think there is any way to ensure it doesn't fail in the future.

Just bought the river 2 with the same solar panel last week for $177. From what I've read it is not easy to return these 🤔🤔🙄 so I am unsure of what to do is this river 3 much better than river 2?

Wow...(assuming true) that seems like a deal breaker unless it is completely sunny and the panels are perfectly clean (plus non losing efficiency due to age or wiring). Pretty narrow margins.

Thanks for the info.

Bought refurb on Ebay while back. Same showing signs of use etc. Would not charge about 81% and they refused to take it back. Had to go thru Ebay.

I know virtually nothing about these EcoFlow units - I really just wanted it for an UPS, set it and forget it - so I haven't checked since plugging it in the first time. How do you know it wouldn't charge past 81%? Did the display indicate that?

Then I got another wrench to throw, Amazon has Ecoflow River 3 PLUS in which you can add another battery to power up to 1200 watt appliances !! With solar panel is $249. $60 more for flexibility of expandability....hmmm

I did get the ebay refurbished unit and mine came almost new. No scruffs no marks.
