I got quoted close to $20k for a full Generac automatic backup system, which I thought was insane. I ended up getting a 50amp transfer switch and lockout for $600, ran a gas extension for $400, and bought the Westinghouse 9500TFc and was all in for under $2k, which was great. Two problems with that setup: the Westinghouse in incredibly loud and the THD was concerning. I figured for a backup it was fine, but when this unit went on sale on Black Friday for ~&1,800 I pulled the trigger and absolutely love it. MUCH quieter. No worries about THD issues. Very happy with the purchase. I run it entirely on that natural gas extension, so maintenance is simply changing the oil periodically.

I can't speak to the long-term reliability, but the unit seems very well built and so far has fired up perfectly every time I've turned it on. Also seems relatively easy to get into and work on if anything does come up.

This is a great price:
1. Closed frame inverter meaning better fuel efficiency, quieter, and safe for sensitive electronics
2. High power for an inverter generator
3. Tri fuel capability
4. Sams club return policy whereas most stores (HD, Lowes) don't even take returns on opened generators

Although might not be the right generator for everyone:
1. As @chuck4rooke mentioned, the sustained power outlet under your chosen fuel will be much less than 11,000 watts. If you need more power, you can get non-inverter units with more power for the same price or you can buy 2 of these to run in parallel.
2. If your intention is to run on gas or propane, you're paying a huge premium over the $900 GMiaed at sams club for only somewhat more power.

Good price. Westinghouse trifuel 11500 watt generator has more power generated with natural gas and low THD <5%
Yes exactly, and a good point to note when comparing to Westinghouse - Westinghouse uses the running wattage in their model names whereas Genmax uses the peak wattage. So be sure to compare like specs.

The westinghouse is not an inverter and painfully loud though

I have this, bought before the holiday sale and Sam's refunded me $100. It was out of stock during the Fall with the Carolina Hurricanes. Probably the least expensive 240v Inverter out there and with a 14-50R outlet.

Harbor Freight Predators only come with 90 day warranty I believe…you have to pay hundreds more to extend.

Champion come with 3 year warranty.

GenMax is 1 year.

Generator Bible is the place to compare models

Paid $2k for a 9000w single fuel GenMax inverter a couple years ago, so this is a good deal. Lower price, better output & multiple fuel options.

These only come with a 1 year warranty though.

I've considered this and I think it's a good idea and setup. The only downside I can see is that a whole house generator with ATS would be seen as a valuable add on to the house whereas something like this may be viewed either as neutral or a negative depending on how well it was done.

Probably not worth changing your plans over but if the numbers were a little closer the might edge the generac up a bit.

You can buy a cheap tester on Amazon and get a good ballpark. For HVAC stuff, you'll likely need a soft start to reduce the initial Amp load. Our assumption was that the power outage we are prepping for would be 1-2 weeks at most (post hurricane or freeze) and we wouldn't run everything, but could run all of our 110 stuff (lights, electronics, refrigerators) and use space heaters and/or portable A/C to keep our place operational, but in a kind of "limp mode."

The whole home generator folks will basically take the total power draw of everything and add it all up, add some margin, and quote you that system - which is often WAY overkill. I'm a slick-deals kinda guy, if we're in an emergency, I can toggle things so I'm not running the A/C, stove, oven, washer / dryer, hair-dryer all at once.

Depending on how often power outages are a problem and that cost differential will dictate which is the better option. Some portable gens have remote starts - you can find YT videos where people take portable gens, semi-permanently install them in small, noise-deadening sheds with exhaust systems, and only have to go to their panel to swapm the interlock as the generator can be started remotely. Really depends on how much of a problem power outages are.

I have an 11kw traditional gen that I can plug into an exterior outlet that goes to an interlock. I do have NG but it's not worth the tradeoff for me - you take a huge kw hit from gas to NG. The upside is never running out of fuel and NG burns much cleaner.

Just a heads-up that after Hurricane Helene impacted the Carolinas there were signs all over the Sam's Club locations that generators were non-returnable. I don't know whether they actually enforced it but they definitely wanted you to think about it before purchasing...
