No, you're safe. Your dishes, however, may not be as lucky. Microwaving melamine won't make it spark, explode or leech chemicals. Nothing's going to happen to you or the dishes in the microwave. But you're slowly killing it. Frequent microwaving, or heating it above 160°F with any method, will shorten the life of your dinnerware.
Melamine dinnerware is made from melamine resin and wood pulp. High heat dries the pulp, which will eventually make the item brittle. It will also turn brown. It's similar to a twig or leaf that's been in the sun too long. Microwaving heats water molecules to 212°F. That's way beyond the 160°F that's considered safe.
I should add that if you heat acidic foods at ≥160°F for more than 2 hrs, then there is a chance of minor leeching. But no such risk exists for a quick run of the microwave.
So if you want to microwave melamine dinnerware, go ahead. Just be aware that they'll discolor and break more easily. If you buy them from the Dollar Store, then the convenience of microwaving probably outweighs the expense of replacing them. But if they're expensive, I'd avoid frequent microwaving.
FUN FACT: micro-abrasive Magic Erasers are made from melamine foam.
