If someone asked me how to make a free mobile data plan, my very first thought would be "control its DNS, packet-inspect everything on my network so I can tell who's doing what, sell that info to data brokers, advertisers, marketing agencies, etc., and insert enough legalese to my long-AF-that-nobody-reads-it terms of service that it's totally OK for me to do that." Classic case of "if it's free, it's because you are the product."

If you think I'm joking, check your own current paid ISP plan's terms of service. Non-trivial probability they're already doing similar to you, at least if you're not protected by something like the EU's GDPR.

Is that what's going on here, or is their business model different somehow?
Right now their 20$ a month plan turns out to cost a couple of dollars a month if you opt in to their location tracking. They are trying to build a network of hotpots to fill in what traditional cell towers miss. Turn on tracking and they map whenever they hit one of their hotspots. Then they try to get new ones in empty areas.

Anyways...So they will pay you in their crypto token., Which they then accept as payment.Or you can sell yourself. Im assuming they are going to expand on this somehow.

Also a while back they were talking about another app that carriers were going to opt into that allows people to use each others phones a a hotspot for a small fee.
Just a guess but maybe something with this as well.

They are not the only company going this way there are going to be some announcements very soon of others going this path
I gave them my email address for spam, so we'll see. Right now it looks like they just offer one plan -- $20/mo for unlimited.

Tempted to try. But Tello for 2nd phone at $6/mo for 1GB/100min has been consistent with no surprises or privacy issues.
Yup. I am also using Tello's $6 a month deal and it has been very dependable as it uses T-Mobile's network. I have a ton of data and minutes acrued by doing the manual roll over.

I am interested in this Helium deal for a spare phone. After reading the comments I think I will pass up on this Helium free deal due to the ID verification, having location ON and Helium selling your data.

Ok, I failed verification but customer support got back to me a bit over 24 hours later (after sending me an initial email earlier today saying they were looking into it), now my free account is good to go! Definitely going to be a 'sockdrawer phone', but at least their customers service is responsive.

It doesn't say anywhere that they need driver's license. Zero plan requires location sharing is the only requirement that I can see.

The BREAKFREE code is what everybody is using. It should work.

Helium does require location access. Too early to know if there are penalties if location is not always turned ON. As an alternative, you could try removing the app on your primary phone and installing it onto a 2nd device. Maybe also carry the 2nd device with you on occasion. I am sure somebody will try this. Can Helium detect that your primary phone is not using the app? I do not know.

Seems like there are still issues with people trying to sign up and failing at the ID verification point. If it keeps failing, either contact support or just wait a few days or so and see if they fix this glitch. Helium uses a 3rd-party company for ID verification. Helium would not have access to that information.

They warn of "severe throttling if location is disabled. Also no Tethering. Also it takes your wifi and clones it to use when youre at home for data. sms, calls.
AND. once installed you have to contact support to reinstall the esim. If you try to get 2 accounts for free they ban both.

Does Helium require an app? If app is required, can it be deleted after the SIM is installed? Is dialing done through the native dialer or Helium's dialer? Will this work on dumb phones? Thank you.
yes
no
native
yes but you need to pay for a sim
EDIT - iOS 14 and newer and Android 11 and newer.

Says someone who just, quite unironically, just posted this on Slickdeals...a free to use website. Sigh.

any cost to switch between SIM and eSIM? or transfer eSIM from one phone to another?
no. I received email couple days ago it says my sim shipped. I'm waiting to arrive but didn't pay anything and didn't ask anything.

Been using the $20 / month plan since January 2024. I renewed via the pre-pay for the year via crypto and saved some money when they came out with their recent option to do so.

I don't really have any issues at all outside of the 5G being slow at times, when that happens I just turn off the 5G on my phone and it goes to 4G that ends up working really well. No complaints about the service, haven't really ever had to reach out to customer service outside of when the data mapping wasn't crediting properly a couple of times, which they helped fix.

I signed up for the "Zero" aka Free plan on another phone and it went off without a hitch. I get that they'll basically be tracking that phone's location data, which I'm alright with. It's going to be a phone that's just a separate number. These guys have been trying to disrupt the market for a while now and I don't know if it's going to end up working, but I don't have any complaints about their services so far since T-Mobile has strong towers everywhere I travel personally. Might not be the case for you depending on where you live.

It worked for me. Choose eSIM option on iPhone 11. 100% free ID verification was required but no credit card was asked for.

What's 100% free ID verification?

Anyway to start the account without giving out a DL?

Has anyone seen the list of phones valid for the free plan? The link in the Ts&Cs leads to a 404.
