If you get tired of waiting for Samsung to do the things you've been waiting on them to do forever, buy an old small form factor PC and put home assistant on it. Buy a dongle like this https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01GJ826F8 so you support both Z-Wave and zigbee devices. Home assistant is great and does so many things that smartthings doesn't, I can finally run routines based off of running water thanks to the integration with my Moen Flow Smart water controller for example. Some of my devices I thought were really limited, but they weren't they can do all kinds of stuff it's just the smart things didn't support them correctly. As a smartthings user since it was released, my only regret is not going to home assistant sooner.

Yes. Its a wireless charger and ST hub, and when you set your phone down on it for the night you can have it automatically run routines (like turning off lights, smart locks, etc).

Biggest complaint is this one no longer supports z-wave, which many first gen IoT devices still run on. This one still supports zigbee and contains a TBR for matter devices. Can also link multiple stations to extend coverage area.

I didn't know what a smartthings station was but it looks like it's just for wireless charging of devices? I was hoping it was a base station to upgrade the one I have but I don't think that is what this is...

Anyone have experience using it as a hub? Does it offer anything the original smart things hub doesn't?

Fyi, the fast charging is only for samsung phones. iPhones charge at normal speed.
The button on top can be used for three different automation inside app.
It's a matter+thread hub but not sure how it works.
All zigbee devices connect and pair as needed.

it does work as a SmartThings hub but it lacks ZWave compared to their older proper hubs

I've never understood the entire SmartThings by Samsung... It's like they just stopped making them or something. I don't get it

If i already have a gen 3 hub, will this work as a pseudo backup hub also running in same home?

That is nuts - z-wave is still a major smart home protocol, and the latest standard has greatly improved range. The majority of quality (non-wifi) smart locks also use it. I don't know what Samsung was thinking in removing it; makes it an instant non-recommendation for me for anyone interested in SmartThings, especially given the Gen 3 is still being sold (albeit by Aeotec now, who were always the manufacturer).

Just get a tiny UPS mesnt for routers and such, you'll probably want your wifi to continue to work as well, anyway. I bought one on sale for $25 over half a decade ago as backup for my router, cable modem, ST hub and Hue hub, and it still does its job wonderfully.

The community is still strong, and they write most of the drivers, so it's definitely a solid alternative platform if you aren't comfortable diving into HomeAssistant. I have a gazillion smart home devices and sensors, and never had any issues getting them running through ST.
Just get the hub that actually supports Z-Wave, rather than trying to be a phone charger.

I got this before I realized it lacked Z-wave support. Returned it and ended up getting a Hubitat C5 off eBay for like $30.
