They charge my gift card balance. Once the book ships they refund and deduct from the book voucher balance. The attached book cost over $10 and the full amount was covered by vouchers.
If it isn't working for others I will gladly take your codes since it is working for me.

I've been redeeming these bookshelf codes for over a year now and I have not had any issues. It's often I will see the voucher's redemption value pulled out of my existing Amazon gift card balance, but it will be reversed eventually, maybe after shipping is finalized. You can even see this happen in your gift card balance transaction ledger (https://www.amazon.com/gp/css/gc/balance); it shows up like:
If you happen to have promotional gift certificates, those get deducted first. I had the same issue with mine. I ended up purchasing something else that was sold & shipped by Amazon, to zero that out. I ended up getting a $14 book. Have $6 balance leftover now.

Standard Amazon.com return policies will apply to orders paid in whole or in part with Bookshelf Vouchers. A return credits the original order payment methods and any portion that was paid for with a Voucher reimburses your Voucher credit amount. That credit can subsequently be applied to any book for which the Bookshelf Voucher is applicable.
