The material isn't as thick as The North Face Base Camp duffels, which this competes with, but it is still quite sturdy. Patagonia also has a lifetime warranty (just like TNF), so if it gets killed using it for travel, then they will repair/replace it. It will be perfectly fine putting it inside a suitcase. Using it AS the suitcase would be fine too, but I wouldnt pack anything remotely fragile inside it. The Patagonia duffels are much easier to use because of the more flexible material. The North Face duffels are more bulletproof if you need something that will survive severe abuse.

With regard to the deal--this is barely better than buying direct from Patagonia, and Patagonia offers free shipping over $99. The only reason I'd go with this retailer is if the colors you want arent on sale on Patagonia's website.

Personally, I will wait. I picked up a 70L from a Patagonia Outlet over the summer for $80. I'd like a 55L in either Patagonia or TNF to use for stowing in the overhead on a plane. People will say 32L is the limit, but Ive put my 42L TNF duffel both overhead and under the seat. I'm next to positive no one will say anything about a 55L. Especially if you wear it as a backpack when you are getting on the plane.
RTIC 70liter is my "go to" and only $45 https://rticoutdoors.com/Duffle-Bag

Would this do well getting beat up when checked in? Thinking about packing this inside of my suitcase on my Asia trip to bring back gifts/souvenirs.

I've gotten away with using the 71L TNF as an overhead bag. Just don't pack it completely stuffed lengthwise and it works. Smilie

I have been using this exact duffle for the last 8-9 years and it has held up amazingly well. The waterproof outer is really durable and has survived quite well, even if the high-wear bottom is now basically black. I'm not easy on gear and this bag has endured. 55L is a great size for 3-5 days and it's surprising how much stuff you can fit in this. It packs down ok but the waterproof fabric isn't as packable/supple as a nylon fabric bag. The only things I don't like about it are that it's easy to accidentally fling stuff out of the mesh lid pockets if you don't zip them and the older style straps can be a little finnicky with the buckle.
Otherwise, this is an excellent duffle and I'm not afraid to use it how it should knowing that Patagonia backs it up.

They make great stuff but I just can't do it with the big Patagonia letters.. It just seems a little trashy, makes me think of the 90s with all the Tommy Hilfiker T shirts and all that, big huge branding everywhere - No thanks

100% agree, the RTIC deal is excellent. It's a different bag though as it doesn't have the backpack feature.

So like my TNF Base Camp duffel I never fly with, those round dimensions puts it outside the carryon on size.

I own the 40 & 55L Black holes because as a 1.5 bagger, I don't ever have to check them in the U.S. (I use different bags outside the States). But get your packing cubes to a) keep your stuff organized, and b) help you from overpacking.

And BTW, if you don't know how to repack them, here ya go:

Solid bag.
I've taken this 55L as a carryon backpack (along with a normal backpack) on planes all over US, Caribbean, EU and never had a problem.
Sometimes I even have like 40-80lb of cables in it. No tears or anything yet.

I have two of these in different sizes, including the 55L. Highly recommend. Spent 2 weeks in Europe with this on my back. Would take it again in a heartbeat.

I'm a huge fan of the REI Big Haul duffels. More features than the black hole, incredibly well made.
