For those out there who want to take moon photos, the new series has just been released. These are pretty awesome for what they are. In addition, the p1000 has been sold out for quite some time and going for a higher price on Ebay.

https://www.adorama.com/inkcpp1100.html

For reference, I took these moon photos on p900 with no edits or special modes. See photos 3 and 4. This should be a little bit more zoom.

I appreciate any rep trying to level up! Mostly I buy.

The msrp is $1099. This is no discount. I pre-ordered one because my son has been asking for P1000. If there are other retailers offering more discount or including accessories, I will cancel and switch.
The P950 is on sale at Nikon refurbished right now

If they increase the sensor size, it actually reduces the magnification, which is the entire point of this camera line.
yep, or the camera would get far bigger to keep the same magnification level.

Can anyone comment on the fully zoomed in image quality vs just using a APS-C sized sensor mirrorless camera with a ~200-300mm lens and cropping in post? You'd really have to constantly use the furthest reach of the zoom range for this camera to make sense.

Make sure you get yourself a decent tripod.

You'd be cropping 450mm and 20MP vs 3000mm, so it's like 7:1, so 3 megapixels on the whole frame, crop that and you have very few pixels of the bird.

So this camera will get you bird shots you simply can't get with a 450mm lens. Problem is the shots will be crap, so not sure what's the point.

I'd get the P950 if you want a super zoom. 3000mm is pushing this sensor way too far.

Any recommendations on a good safari camera; I own the older Sony a6000 (not full frame) and have loved it and think it will be fine. What does everyone else think and I'd love to be able to take awesome astrological photos?

7:1 of zoom is 49:1 of pixel. So 20mp @ 450mm = 0.4m @ 3000mm

Oh I get that, I was just hoping 2025 had some sort of innovation that allowed the same magnification with a larger sensor size. We've done the impossible before.

Optics are a tough field for innovation. Increasing the sensor size by 50% would require significantly more glass to cover the new dimensions. Once that is done, forget about retaining the same optical quality at the same price point.

Thanks yeah, so cropping a 70-300mm isn't going to get you anything remotely like a 3000mm lens.

I think that's the point of these superzooms, you'll get shots you can't get otherwise. They won't look very good, so whether that's worth it is up you the buyer.

I think they should have increased the sensor size and reduced the zoom to 2000mm, made an updated P950. 3000mm is really too long, you need a tripod for that.

There's software that upscales resolution, but it sucked when I tried it. Eventually this kind of camera will have that built in, although I think these superzooms will die out before then.

I rented the P1000 for a week and then shot a friends P950. I bought the P950 as anything past 1,800-2,000mm reach is pretty filled with visible noise and softness. Note that these small sensors need lots of light too. These are good for stationary object shooting as trying to get a bird in flight is impossible. If you want to shoot BIF, go with a APS-C sensor and even then it's a challenge. I've owned and still own a number of these super zoom cameras and while I like them all, it's a challenge with the need for light and the less movement the better.
You'd get atmospheric haze too
