On paper, the specs look great, and is a better value than other WiFi 7 routers. Plus, Asus has free protection, etc. and a good reputation. And the "expert" review (dongknowstech) said it was good.

I bought it for $183 (15% off $219 for an old router trade in, + $5 member certificate at BestBuy) and tried it for 2 weeks. It was problem after problem (disconnects, thermal errors, core spikes, unstable speed). The forums are full of frustrated users with these problems. I tried a second unit (good value, worth a shot) and had the same issues. Replaced it with another brand wifi 7 router and it has been reliable with a stronger signal (it's a TP-Link unit, not everyone may buy with the ban threats)

Here's [asus.com]10 pages of frustrated posts on one thread alone. . There are other threads

Maybe a firmware issue will fix this in the future, but it's not worth it for now. I'm hoping Asus will fix it and it'll be a good choice in the future.

Plus it has been this price for a few weeks now, so I'm guessing it'll be available at this price in the future.

Woah! That's an expensive router. Why does it have to be so expensive? (genuine Q., I see routers for ~$25 and such)

Asus makes great routers but this one is not one of them. If you run a VPN on a router I recommend one of the routers that can be flashed with AsusWRT firmware by Merlin. You can find a list of these routers here. https://cyberinsider.com/vpn-router/

Because it's Wi-Fi 7. The price is coming down but still too expensive across the board. Not to mention a lack of standards around whether Wi-Fi 7 gear includes 6GHz.

Bought this router for a friend, WFH, big bandwidth needs

Updated firmware (v3.0.0.6.102_37435) immediately due to widespread stability issue reports, set up 6ghz, 5ghz and 2.4ghz networks to connect work PC, mobile devices and IoT devices, respectively. Easy to setup, easy to update firmware, reports are its rock solid

Wifi 7 6ghz range feels mediocre (vs 5ghz Wifi 6) but I couldn't say if that is the router or the nature of a higher bandwidth wireless connection

I like it more than AX 86U because of the tri band it ran smoother than ax86u. for new router please get the tri band …..I got more then full speed that I pay for on WiFi. Please don't buy WiFi 7 with out 6 Ghz ( it used more then 700+mb of 1gig of ram ) hope fix on new firmware

I also bought this and it's been pretty stable for me. I bought because its the cheapest Asus 10G + Wifi 7 triband (yes I know 2x2 vs 3x3) with 1x 10G and 4x 2.5G (moved to 2.5G/10G home LAN after adding a 10G NAS). I'd prefer 2x 10G for wan + connecting a 10G switch, but since my WAN speed is still 1G I use one of the 2.5G ports for WAN and the 10G port for my 10G switch. I'm seeing the log temp errors / high CPU usage posted by others but after a FW update plus factory reset I have all cores running around 25%. Router FW is pretty good from a UI and feature perspective. Like the mobile app. I've used DDWRT before but ended up returning to stock Asus since its gets updated regularly and there aren't a lot of features I miss (not a power user, but have a lot of WAN/LAN traffic). Loved the AX86U style both for smaller footprint and stability / performance. Hope this one becomes a worth succesor especially after more FW updates.

I also purchased this last week. First thing I did was update the firmware to the latest version. I would get random disconnects while playing games, video calls and wifi calling. Tried tinkering with the settings and also disabling qos and ai protection with no changes. 3-4 cores would sometimes hit 100% and stay there for a good while with just basic usage like internet and YouTube. Really want to like this router but I might end up returning it.

Buy be88u, not this one. This one does no support merlin firmware at least for now. Also speed is worse than an ax86u few years ago. In the end be88u + ax86u as aimesh to get 1.6 to 1.8gbps full house.

I run PFSENSE for my router/firewall. I'm only interested in using this as an Access Point. Would you recommend?

I'm currently using a TP-link Deco XE75 pro with at least 45 wifi devices. My internet link is 2Gbps / 350mbps (Comcast)

The max downloads I've gotten on my Samsung S22U is 1.6Gbps and that's within 3 feet away from the AP. I usually get up to 600 Mbps around the house

Doesn't this one have a weaker 5ghz band than others?

Typically, only when you also have 6Ghz enabled alongside it.

People don't seem to realize that while some devices allow you to run both simultaneously, you really shouldn't.

Even trying to hotspot with 6Ghz on a mobile device informs you that it's going to turn off other radios to accomplish it.

If you need to support 2.4Ghz, 5Ghz, and 6Ghz simultaneously, you're better off running two or even three routers.
