This is non-sliding though. I wonder if this one is good for me for cutting a bunch of shelving for the closets, or should I wait for a sliding miter?

Depends how big these shelves are.

It's doable (just flip the board halfway through cut), but if you're doing a bunch just save yourself the time and hassle by spending a bit more on a sliding meter saw. The DeWalt goes on sale regularly and has good resale value because it's the standard saw used in Construction.

Anyone have feedback on the dust collection? Seems like an odd place for it; does it actually work at all?

I have the 10" version and the dust collection isn't very good at all. You need to cut in the garage or outdoors. If oyu''re doing a closet shelves just flip the board around to match the cut half way, as much as the blade will allow. If the cut isn't super straight, it won't matter, because oyu won't see it once it's in the wall.

The cut capacity for this saw is 8" at 90 degrees (square end cut). So, if your shelves are going to be larger than 8" but less than 16", you would need to cut the board once, flip the board, and cut it again. This would quickly become a hassle for many boards and you may wish you had bought the sliding version which is $170 more or gone with a cheaper sliding saw.

The sliding Metabo is nice because the rails are fixed and the saw slides back and forth on them, minimizing the saw's depth. It has a cut capacity of 12".

Dust collection on these saws and especially the sliding saw will be poor.

Table saw might be better for cross-cutting shelves.

Buy a sliding saw with a smaller blade.

Thanks everyone. I also will be cutting a bunch of baseboards so sliding miter is way to go.

Just grab the Bauer 10" slider from Harbor freight. Unless you are cutting large base or crown, the slider will be more useful

I did my closets with a ryobi 18v circular saw. I bought a blade for cutting the laminated boards. They all came out clean, considering how cheap and thin the laminate is in those Home Depot boards.

I bought the 10 inch version and it was missing one little piece from the parts bag (which was loosely tied), and they told me to box it all back up and return the whole thing to get another one. If you check amazon reviews for metabo search for the word missing. Learned the hard way that their north american support doesn't exist. I had to threaten to make a youtube video in an email that I CC'd to their us business's executive for them to send me the parts. This was this last summer.
