About this game:
  • Ninja Gaiden Black is a reworked compilation of the original Ninja Gaiden and the two Hurricane Packs. The game features new foes, such as exploding bats and doppelgänger fiends who can imitate Ryu. It contains more costumes than the original, and swaps Ninja Gaiden's unlockable NES games for an arcade version.
  • One key feature of this version is its two new difficulty settings—the easy Ninja Dog and the very hard Master Ninja. Another feature of Black is its Mission Mode, which comprises 50 combat missions, one of which is adapted from the custom game designed for the Ninja Gaiden Master Tournament World Championship final. The last five missions are based on those in Hurricane Pack 2 and form a linked series known as "Eternal Legend". While most of the improvements made in the Hurricane Packs carried forward through this game, including the camera system tweaks and new boss battles, the Intercept maneuver, introduced in Hurricane Pack 1, was not included in Black, adding to its increased challenge.

Thought they added dog mode for peeps who couldn't handle normal difficulty. It took me a while but I beat this game. Reminds me of dark souls. It has no mercy!

I know opinion is divided but this game is extremely punishing. I tried to enjoy it but hit a brick wall with combos and trying to "get good". In the end I move to Ninja Gaiden Sigma and felt far more powerful and capable of progressing in the game. It didnt feel unfair.

Still probably the best version of the game, IMO. OG version had camera problems, and the later Ninja Gaiden Sigma decided to make the game even harder by adding so many enemies that the game hardly felt enjoyable to play anymore--I could barely do anything other than block, roll, and flying swallow.

It's been $5 before. I loved Ninja Gaiden Black when I first got it on the original Xbox and appreciate the ways that Sigma is worse, but honestly I'd rather have the improved graphics and quality of life features of the Sigma re-release from a couple years ago (still on Game Pass, I think) than the tighter gameplay of Black.

Truly, a difficult game and I wasn't even on the hardest setting. Probably one of the most frustrating and challenging games I've ever played although it was a very fun experience. I can't imagine how quick a person's twitch reflexes have to be to master this thing.

This is a game that gave me such a feeling of accomplishment when I beat it that when I see this game I feel happy and proud. But I will admit I started playing it again recently a thinking I could do so casually and I got wrecked. Challenging but extremely satisfying once you get into the swing of things. Camera can be frustrating. You will learn to use the camera reset button as 2nd nature every time you face a new direction.

I remember the original on NES. I had it on for weeks and freaked my wife out when I beat the final boss. Kind of fun that they kept it so unforgiving, but I gave this a shot a year or two ago on gamepass and it was a complete no-go. YMMV
