Made in China
There are a lot of great quality knives made in China, and a bunch of lesser quality knives. Whenever a seller only lists the knife steel at "stainless steel" that almost ALWAYS indicates that they are hiding very low quality stainless along the line of 3cr13, 4cr14 or 420J2. Those are all soft steels that will take and edge, will be easy to sharpen, but will not hold an edge for very long. And, even at these "half-off" prices that's way too much to pay. Maybe, with the BOGO, these might be deals if you like the style of the knife, but don't expect much.

I do own one Remington branded folding knife and it holds an edge okay. It's built well enough to not fall apart or be dangerous to use as a tool. But, I paid something like $9 for it on sale at a Big 5 years ago. I wouldn't automatically thumbs down this deal, but just know what you are getting for the money.

Looks like they really want to get rid of these and the ambiguous language around steel used has been updated in at least one version of the PDF catalog. For those who don't know they had a buy one get one for 50% off before so these must not be moving very fast.

The quality of the steel is the key. And steel production is top military level secret from country to country. When it comes to hand tools, knives and anything like that, made in USA, German and Japan, always cost MORE, but that's what you want.

They had both D2 and stainless in the online product description for a couple of them, (D2 is not a stainless steel) and one Redditor who actually got them had stainless on the blade of the two. Even the one with swappable blades says 8cr13mov in some places and 440 in others.

Some Chinese steel is of wonderful quality, and US steel is not the hallmark of superior quality it once was. I don't think you can rely on country of manufacturer anymore, and should instead look at the actual type of steel and the manufacturer's heat treatment quality.

That said, countries like China that have a very low labor cost will always be havens for cheaply made goods. But that doesn't mean they can't make quality knives and knife steel.

The heat treatment process is just as important and arguably more important than steel quality. Prime example is the Ozark Trails D2 steel knife that can't hold an edge....the factory quality control is crap

For anyone on the fence this deal stacks with coupon code WORKSHARP20OFF for an additional 20% off. That barlow can be a kids first knife in scouting or something. (1065 steel according to the catalog btw)

I just got two versions that I ordered in and am super impressed especially considering cost. I got much more than I expected in other words.

The Remington Stacked Leather Piggyback Fixed Knife Set is really stunningly nice and I regret not ordering more. I have some Bucks in the $100 range and fit and finish on the Remington is significantly better. Handle is beautiful and nicely polished and they are sharp as razor out the box. Sadly that is out of stock or I would order ten or more.

The Remington Hunter Trailing Point Folding Knife 4" is also very nice locks up solid as can be and had dropped close action right out of the box. I could have some quibble about minor ergonomics issues but overall again very very nice. This one still in stock.

Think both absolute great deals and even a steal at these prices.

Yeah the barlow is decent too, with the coupon it was $7.50 a piece so can't complain about that. Saw a post about 1065 being appropriate for a beginner to heat treat so I'd imagine it'll be alright.
