Had the original M.2 2230 from my ROG Ally laying around since I replaced it with higher capacity. This deal will put that M.2 to use again, thanks!
too small? it only fits the "small" Steam Deck sized 30mm 2230 instead of larger "normally" sized 80mm M.2 2280 drives

Very possible that a lot of buyers didn't understand that it's only for 2230 drives (the tiny ones).

One reason it might be frequently returned beyond people not realizing it's for 2230 drives is that it seems to have inconsistent compatibility. It works with some of my PCs with USB-C but not all of them. I almost returned it when it wasn't detected on the first laptop I plugged it into.

Probably because people don't realize it's designed to fit a 2230, which is much shorter than your typical SSD of 2280.

imo these aren't practical as the enclosures for 2280 drives typically have multiple screw holes for the various sizes.

Good price for what it is, but also very limiting since it only can be used with the smallest size drives. I've been using a different model from the same brand, which allows use of all m2 drive sizes, and have been very happy with it.

if you buy this, chances are, at some future time you will wish you had spent $10 more and gotten one that could fit all drive sizes.

I second that. I install Linux on a "usb" drive like that and use it with my corporate laptop.
