The only thing to know is, before you set it up, read up on set-up tips to maintain ad-free status when you're setting it up without turning on something or another for kids. I can't recall what you do, will have to look it up myself. That should be easy to find, but it seems like there was something you have to do when setting it up so it doesn't bypass ad-free when you're forgoing some kids' setting. Mind you, the ads are only ever on the lockscreen anyway, so it's not a big deal if you don't do this. And you still get a 2-yr worry-free warranty and a free case out of it.
Added: From a quick search, Amazon may have thwarted the attempts to keep it ad-free for adults in this new model, but it's unclear if there was still a workaround. I'll do a deeper dive into that before turning this on the first time just in case.

However, in waiting for deals before, fire tablets I was planning to trade in dropped from $30 in value to $15, so that cut out the extra savings I'd been wating for in the sale price. So now I'm wondering if before long those $15 ones will drop to $5, again cutting my overall savings. So maybe there's not much point in waiting on this, lol.

In that case, any reason one would not go with the kids edition?

I have the kids' version from 2021, and posters at that time explained how to bypass whatever it is that turns off the ad-free status when setting it up without the kids' status. You need to do whatever it was on initial setup, so you have to look it up before turning it on the first time. As to whether that has somehow been blocked, I don't know, but I sure as heck will google it before I turn the device on for the first time.

I have the 2015 and still bought the 2021 model even though I was happy with the old one, just cause it's fun to get the upgraded features (but could've easily lived without them and not cared). I'll upgrade to this new one for much the same reasons. The increased speed is a nice perk, though.
Larger display, warm color temp option, and inverted negative display are the biggest reasons. much easier on your eyes if you read in total darkness. If most of your reading is in daylight then not as much advantage to upgrade.
Fyi, the reason I'd sell my old one rather than trade it is I've still got a 20% off code good til the end of the month from a trade-in I shipped in advance of BF hoping for a deal (didn't find one I wanted -- which is fine, I'm lousy with Amazon devices I can trade in). Even if I didn't already have a discount code, it would still make sense for me to trade in one of my other old devices I no longer used that are valued at $5 to get that 20%, and then sell the 11th gen paperwhite on eBay. Amazon gives only $30 for the trade-in, and I know my excellent condition device with cover could fetch more on eBay.
Also, the latest paperwhites have issues with yellowing at the bottom of the screen. I recently just bought a couple of the basic kindles instead for my kids since those aren't affected by the issue.

The model in this ad gets yellowing at the bottom of the screen? Is that just in certain modes/brightness? I normally have mine set to low brightness. I knew the color Paperwhite had some issues and was going to get this 12th gen Paperwhite instead at some point this year, but if it's likely to have yellowing, I might want to wait to let them work out the bugs.
I have an 11th gen now, I like it, but I wouldn't mind the faster page turns and bigger screen of the 12th gen.

You check out books via Libby off the kindle and send them to the kindle right? If so, just check them out to your own account then share the books to your kid's kindle profiles. An extra step but easy to do and keeps the kids reading library books in their kids profiles.

No way I want my kids to come to me for each and every book they want to check out.
They just use Libby on their Ipads themselves (with their own Libby accounts and library cards) and use the "adult" side of the kindle and just deal with the ads.
The ad-free part of the kindle is really only for toddlers now. The only real reason to get the kids version is for the free case.
