Yes, all air conditioners require an exchange of air from one area to another. The condenser essentially removes the potential heat energy from one source and dissipates the heat outside. In a lot of marketing, especially in EcoFlow's, they show this unit just sitting in a tent. This would not be effective to any degree without the input and output hoses.

Without sticking part of the unit outside or using a hose, you would be circulating both cold and warm air in the same spot.

I have been thinking about picking this or a similar unit up, but the price has had me quite wary. The general consensus is that it doesn't do very much to cool down areas without significant insulation (and a 5k BTU unit is on the scale of a small room window unit).

On the flip side, this does both heat AND cooling (as it is the same process, just reversed). This adds to its versatility, and I very much like the idea of having an emergency solution to cool or warm air in a pinch.

Pissing on a forrest fire....

I've looked at this unit for awhile now real reviews are all over the place. A 30ft camper needs at least 12k btu to make an impact.

If using in a house, does it need that hose that vents out the window?

Yes. This type of AC will work best if there's a hot air exhaust.

What are the thoughts on this for keeping a 30' RV cool(ish) while operating on battery?

Non-existent. Don't waste your money on this to try and cool at 30' RV

Since this heats. Will this be a good idea to heat a garage in the winter. Help keep it 50-60 degrees?

Keep the capacity in mind when considering this unit, it's on the smaller end of most window units. I wouldn't try to heat or cool anything bigger than a small room.
It works great for a small area, especially if you won't be moving around much. I may mount this somewhere in my truck camper after insulating if I can find a good spot for it.

It could probably keep the 'master bedroom' cool, but I wouldn't count on it having a chance of cooling the whole thing, especially in 85f+ temps with direct sun. RV insulation isn't that great.

What's funny & a little ironic here is that the ebay 2yr allstate warranty is better than the 1yr ecoflow warranty on a new unit. Allstate warranty typically means you get a full refund if a failure occurs within 2yrs.

Not powerful enough. Maybe something less than 16' long

Depends on what ambient is where you are. Is your garage 0°F in the northeast, Midwest, or otherwise? Probably won't do anything at all.

Are you in Florida or Texas where you are trying to heat a 40° garage up to 50 or 60°? This could help.

The other problem with heat exchangers is that when they sit on the side that is cooler, they tend to frost over quick. This is why heat pumps (mini splits, etc) usually have a defrost cycle when they are used in cold climates.

Not saying this will freeze, but it is just less effective when the unit is in a really cold atmosphere.

You're probably better off getting this to heat: https://slickdeals.net/share/iphone_app/t/18113101

Or a cheapo electric garage heater

Get a diesel heater for that.

My window unit with 14k btu can do a room in a house that has great insulation. 5k in an RV? I don't think it has the power to fight all that heat. It will work for one room in the RV though.
