Norton is regarded by many as a resource hog. I stopped using it about 5 years ago because I got tired of all the push marketing. It did consume more resources then, based on my experience although if you have a super-fast computer, or don't do a lot of other resource-intensive things, you might not notice.

The push marketing is is one factor that killed it for me. Plus the fact that a few years ago, Symantec sold off Norton and I wasn't convinced the new Norton company was going to be as good as Symantec had been at developing the program.
Id trust av test more than pc mag and they rated it pretty favorably.

5 device is 45$, better buying 2 3 devices if possible

PC Mag review by Neil J. Rubenking

hands-on malware protection test, ESET detected 84% of the samples, but the fact that quite a few managed to install executable files despite ESET's detection dragged its overall score down to 7.2 of 10 possible points. That's one of the lowest scores among apps tested with this sample set.

ESET's ability to block the latest prevalent malware. It earns a middling 90% protection score, about a third by blocking all access to the dangerous URLs and the rest by eliminating the dangerous downloads. Many competitors managed a perfect 100%, among them Bitdefender, Sophos, and Trend Micro.

If you ask me this is a great price - almost worth it to buy 2 - and try too get 2 years for $40 plus tax?
I did the trial of Malwarebytes and now doing the 30day trail of Bitdefender - both are very good - Bitdefender is a little pricey -been using MS Defender for years - but with Windows 10 - in Oct might lose updates , may be a good idea to find a better solution for protection.. ( research time for me )

Most choices of anti-virus are a personal choice and what works well with your own systems..

How is eset compared with say Norton 360? I've been using Norton forever but not sure if eset would be better, especially at this price.

I've been using Webroot Security Essentials and have been very happy. It costs around $40 on EBay for two years and 3 device protection.

Not just Bitdefender but all of them getting ridiculou$ly high. Shop when they go on sale if you can. Bitdefender was on sale few days ago '2 years \ 5 devices for $30.
Remember, they can charge as much as we willing to pay. ESET 1 year license for $20 even after 66%off is a jock, I wouldn't use it for free.

I use the free antivirus from Microsoft built-in. Since I don't install any programs or software I don't need antivirus.

Another specialist test (AV Comparatives) rated ESET their Product of the Year as well.

Norton has a rescue disc option (must install on USB or CD) to run on boot before operating system launches to search for malware, viruses, etc.. Norton also has "start up" scan which does not require a USB/CD to scan for threats. Not sure if ESET has either of these features, does anyone know per chance??

Nowadays, most threats are web based. Your system can get infected when you browse a webpage.

I bought ESET for all our devices a few months ago. It's light on resources and was rated highly. The only complaints I have are:

* It makes you register for a ESET Home account - you can't just put in the key and have it activate.

* Some of it's options - banking protection and one other - always have a warning on them if you don't enable them. To enable them, you have to send all of our URL traffic to ESET. I would rather not.

Since this was almost a tie, ratings-wise, with BitDefender, I'll probably be buying that when this expires; I wouldn't have to do any of this if Kaspersky were still a viable choice.
