I use the dot email trick and have had 4 memberships so far…so if your email is [email protected] for the next time just use [email protected] and the 3rd time [email protected] etc etc basically any combination of periods will make Sam's club (and most places) believe its a different email address, but the email still goes to your normal gmail
I have been 'renewing' Sam's club membership every year for $20 (or lower in the past. This year we moved to a city with Costco so I got Costco membership and let Sam's Club membership expire. After a few trips to Costco, I bought Sam's Club again.

Costco is just too crowded for comfort. First parking is a pain and then you have to navigate your cart through hordes. And then finally check out lines are huge. It's just crazy. Sam's club has fewer people and so shopping is MUCH faster. And scan and go is awesome. My wife just refuses to step into Costco now. We figured $20 extra per year for Sam's Club is worth the peace of mind.

We'll probably still keep Costco. $60 is a lot but even one big ticket item a year makes up for it. So we'll keep Costco for major purchases and online ordering. Overall 'deals' are definitely better at Costco. But we'll use Sam's club for regular weekend groceries. Like I said, $20 extra just to avoid the crazy Costco rush is worth it.
I agree 100%. We have both, but I avoid Costco whenever possible. We keep it only because one of the eyeglass prescriptions in our family has a surcharge at places like Zenni, so getting the lenses for $50 at Costco (plus a second pair for "free" with just the cost of frames) ends up breaking even with the membership cost. There are one or two things Costco regularly sells that is a good price (3lbs of chia seeds for like $9 is one) that helps. Kirkland toilet paper is still the pre-pandemic width, so I buy that. We only drive EVs these days, so waiting in line for Costco's "top-tier" gas isn't a benefit for us.

All three Costcos around us are a zoo. The Scan & Go at Sam's is amazing, I can't believe anyone puts up with lines. And a hill that I will die on is that Costco's food sucks compares to Sam's. We have been to all three; my kids hate their pizza and their hot dogs suck (and no sauerkraut!). Froyo is twice as much as Sam's (and it's the same stuff). I don't think you can order food from the Costco app like you can with Sam's; it's nice to just walk up and get my food without waiting in line.

I just don't get the Costco cult following. Like most places, you only save money on some things and they make it up on overpricing others. Their return policy is generous, I'll give them that, but so was REI's before it was abused enough that they had to crack down on it.

Quick note: Costco has gone up to $65 for their standard membership, so it's no longer $60.

Garbage business - 1. Had a Sam's Club membership and didn't spend a cent (the one trip I took I price compared to other retailers in my area and Sam's failed the test).

2. I got a flat tire and had to pull into their parking lot, changed it, but my donut was low on air, and there was nowhere else nearby to fill up. So I went in because I wanted to buy a tire inflator. The greeter told me to go to customer service and ask for a one-day guest membership, customer service said she wouldn't give me a one. I told her I am a Walmart+ member, was a Sam's Club member the year earlier, and really needed some help because I was in a bind. Nope. She said I could walk a mile to Walmart down the road. I couldn't believe it- like, really? I wasn't asking for a free tire inflate service, I wanted to literally walk in and buy something.

What a great, American business that I will never step foot in again. 🇺🇸

I drive up to my local Sam's tire to pump up tires, drop off old tires (free), and pickup tire patches (free). No membership asked or needed. This strategy works with 70% of the tire shops in S Cal. It pays to exercise common sense when working with the public.

You are correct about Costco's cult following. The average Costco member has higher income than the average Sammy...Ferrari vs Toyota drivers. Hourly wage at Costco is higher, but it's because Costco's memberships make up 70% of Costco's total income. Sammy uses technology like Scan and Go to improve the shopping experience.

I prefer meat at Ralphs or Vons when they go on sale. Sams has superior toilet paper, cheapest gasoline, and more brand name cereals.

Membership fees brought in $4.8 billion in the previous fiscal year, which ended Sept. 1, 2024, and $1.5 billion for the previous three months, the company reported in September. The company said it now had 77.4 million paid memberships, an increase of 7.6%. Nearly half (47%) were executive memberships.

What exactly do you feel Costco "overprices"? Their basic business model is pretty simple, they charge a small margin on everything they sell and their profit basically comes from the membership fee.

I have had both over the years but Costco is there mainly because of it's pricing, return policy and their butcher department which is better than the other wholesale clubs (BJs and Sam's). I keep BJ's mainly because of the larger selection and smaller crowds. Sam's I have found offers decent deals and close outs from time to time but generally has lower quality than the other two.

2-3x annually. Cash back store like Gr_p or Sw_s will also have Sammy's promo, once or twice each year.

Have to buy two gallons of milk at Costco. Only one at Sams. Per your statement, Costco rely on higher membership fee to drive profit. That's why only two approved members can checkout at Costco. I prefer the Sammys model...lower membership fee, unit price matching Costco's, and technology to improve shopping experience. You're ready to shop if you have a valid membership barcode on your phone. No proof of ID needed.

I can pickup free tire patch anytime at my local Sam's. No ID required. The local tire manager at Costco wouldn't give out a tire cap. Higher pay does not translate to better customer service.

The made in Mexico Costco car battery has a 3 yr prorated warranty. Sam's sell made in USA Duracell with 3 yr free replacement. Unit cost is within +/-$3.

Went to Sam's yesterday and according to the door monitor they no longer require you to show your card at the door. You could always get around that by saying you were going to the pharmacy. Trying to move towards BJs policy and away from Costcos new strict card scanning policy ?

Costco has to enforce the strict card policy because membership fee makes up a good chunk of Costco's earning. Costco is a publicly traded company and its stock price has far outpaced its earning. Wall Street is betting that members will continue to absorb higher membership price.

99% of my club purchase = gasoline (10-25 cents/gal cheaper). $10-$20 Sam's membership is a bargain. 1-2% long term fuel trim with a steady diet of Sammy's gas. Nothing beats clean fresh gasoline.

Nope. Costco gasoline is rated top tier while sammy doesn't. I guess carbon buildup wont matter if you are leasing your car.

In Texas, membership clubs like Sam's and Costco can't refuse alcohol sales to non-members of buying age.

The Sam's club at 9900 S I-35 Frontage Rd, Austin, TX 78748, refused to sell me wine, I'm 62!

To file a complaint to the Texas Alcohol Beverage Commission, the form requires the business's TABC license number. That Sam's refused to give me their number.

Using a new email doesn't work for me. It's clearly based on my personal information because it keeps telling me this offer is for new members only. I've used three new email addresses, and I haven't had a membership with them in over four years.🤔
