I bought a 7730 with no OS a while ago, and the I installed Win 10 from MS ISO without and issue, and it upgraded itself to Win 11. It activated itself. I think they or the people returning them off lease just wipe the drive and move on.
Yeah, I was thinking the same thing... There's a key associated with the laptop somewhere but there's just no os installed.

I couldn't find anything that went into detail about the no OS thing. Does that mean there is no associated Windows 10/11 key so you would have to pay for a license, or just that it isn't installer?
I've purchased 2 laptops from Dell refurbished without an OS. Both installed Win 10 Pro and was then upgraded to Win 11 without any activation issues.

too bad there's a 15% restocking fee for returns unless the thing is defective or dellrefurb itself made an error with the order.

does anyone know if dell or any oem sells refurbished things with fresh batteries, or is always the used battery?

You can just make up an arbitrary reason, they are just trying to avoid resellers using their return policy as a warehouse.

With that said, I have had pretty bad luck with this site. The support people can be nasty and sometimes ignore you, and I've had two machines arrive with broken keyboards. It can take over an hour to replace a keyboard depending on the model, even if they send a replacement part.

It's a complete gamble what you get.

A battery can cost upwards of $150 for a Precision. If they replaced every one with new there would be zero profit. Most of the "wear" on these machines is in the battery and CPU fan, as the only parts that degrade with use.

You can occasionally get lucky and receive a unit with zero battery wear, as if it spent its lease life on an IT shelf never getting deployed.

However, any Dell Refurbished buyer should otherwise assume that they will get something around the 80% threshold Dell Refurbished seems to enforce. Of course, I have received units that did not meet this threshold and the solution from Dell Refurbished is to offer the delivery of a battery (essentially asking you to install the replacement yourself).

Good luck!
Jon

Precision laptops are $3,000-$4,000 new. A new model of 3561 on eBay went for $820 before tax. That's twice the price of this post.

I don't think you're going to find a precision laptop for less than $3K.

This is not an Inspiron. It's designed to be a portable workstation.

I have one of these as my work from home computer. It runs 2 other monitors and I only turn it off the 2 days of the week I go to the office. It even runs a couple of AI LLM models.

this is not dell.com deal. afaik, there has never been an amex offer for this store ...
Yes. This is a Separate site from dell.com where Amex offers work.

Also the promo drops prices by $500, but the lowest available price is $959, so after promo, laptop is $480 without OS.

Depends on the original laptop invoice. If it has an OEM windows license it will activate using the motherboard identifiers. If it didn't, it will not activate. The business could use KMS activation for the Windows Enterprise or Education SKU which will not be tied to the motherboard.
