I bought this 2 years ago at $180 from this exact ebay store. It still works amazingly. I do run into issues occasionally when I use noise cancelling for 10+ hours in a row but usually its pretty good.

There are rumors of a new Sony headset coming out soon maybe mid to late 2025 which is probably why these prices have dropped to historic lows but if this new one comes out and is worse than the XM4 or 5 it'll cause these prices to go back up

2018: XM3, 2020: XM4, 2022: XM5

might be ~$300ish. FCC certified in January.

I have these - use daily most of the day working from home office. They sound pretty amazing, very comfy for extended duration, and have pretty good noise cancellation. However, the mic on these has been solidly meh for video calls - I often receive feedback that things sound just a bit off and/or staticy. Not recommended for that use, sadly. I revert to using my camera's mic which is noticeably better.

Looks like the xm5 is also on sale for $30 more. Debating which one to buy. what are the reasons you prefer the xm4 over the xm5?

The sound quality for the WH-1000XM(x).series is bottlenecked by the low quality electronics in the headset that handle D/A conversion and by the extremely compromised earcup and driver design that prioritizes battery life and form factor over sound quality.

What do you recommend in a similar price range?

Just FYI these have been available new for $168 as of just last week.

Refurbished have been available for a decent amount less than this as well.

Has anyone tried the b&w px7 S2 from Costco new for $199? I know and trust the Bowers & Wilkins brand, as far as sound quality goes but have not listened to their headphones yet.

Keep in mind, this is the price for a refurb, not brand new. On the other hand, there is another post on here that has the XM5, also refurb for $180. If anyone is considering this at $150, why not pay $30 more for the newer (better looking, IMHO) version?

XM5's don't fold as much as XM4's.

For those who prefer heavier bass sounding headphones, the XM4s perform better than the XM5s in that area but compare relatively similar in other areas. In that case, the XM4 is better quality than the XM5s.

XM4s are also more compact for travel. It'll be interesting to see what type of folding the new XM6s will take and whether or not they'll go back to the XM4 fold or perhaps a new type.

I think people just have to accept that these headphones and many others provide only so-so level of sound quality. The equivalent of maybe a decent $60 pair of wired Philips headphones.
Like which ones.....
