The exact one I linked should be the x870e which is what I got. It had more features and I saw it worth the extra bit of cash. Never cheap out on a motherboard, because you'll be feature locked in a few years when you want to add something but can't because you wanted to save $50-100 a few years ago
I got this CPU for $247 on the Micro Center bundle deal last week ($550 with motherboard and 32gb RAM). It is truly powerful and was a significant upgrade from my previous Intel i9-9900k. About 1.3x - 1.5x performance across all tests. Also improved my 3080 about 5-20fps depending on the game. Highly recommended CPU but perhaps get it in a bundle if you're already looking for a matching motherboard.

Yes, the tech in this bundle all released within the past year, so it is totally compatible with an RTX 5070. Just be sure that you get the proper power supply to juice the whole build and you'll be fine.

oh and you'll need to get a cpu heat sink if you get that bundle. it doesn't come with one

Would this bundle work with a 5070 or 5070ti? Rookie asking here. Planing a first build.

I got this as well but with the X670E bundle and it came out to $232 for the CPU. Hard to pass up for that price.

The only thing I don't like is the fragile AM5 socket pins. Be careful when inserting the CPU in the socket.

While only a little bit slower than 14th gen i7 for production it will consume 80 watts less at load.

Great cpu at a great price. I upgraded from the 7900x to this 9900x a few months back. Not a huge improvement but it still made sense for me.

6 years ago I read graphene made CPU would reach 6Ghz or higher. We've been stuck at 5Ghz for 7 years.

And with Precision Boost Overdrive (AMD overclocking) I bet it would match or exceed the i7. Would definitely exceed the i7 with increased wattage enabled by PBO.

Power and heat dissipation issues for mainstream. Not everyone runs theirs on LN or Water cooling to make it feasible in your average build.

So I don't really need to upgrade, but what do y'all think of upgrading from a 7700x? For mostly gaming and software development

Wish I didn't see this, lol. Now I'm definitely going to upgrade. I'm also on 9900k but with a 3090.

Haha yeah I almost didn't pull the trigger but seeing how steep the CPU discount itself was caused me to research performance gains, which was projected at ~40%+, and sure enough it was true. I figured with tariffs incoming this was the best time to make the jump, and I'm super happy I did.

I ended up using my previous i9 to make a secondary "server" PC in my house, running Proxmox with docker containers. So many cool self-hosted apps you can run on it, and the i9 is still super juiced for that kind of purpose!
