As a reminder, the western version of the tx-nr7100 only has pre-outs for the subs, and the subs are not independent. If you want pre-outs, I'd recommend purchasing the integra drx 3.4 at $579: https://slickdeals.net/f/18078391-integra-drx-3-4-9-2-channel-8k-av-receiver-579-free-s-h
The drx 3.4 is essentially a clone of the tx-nr7100 with preouts and a longer warranty.
Preouts would allow you to run a separate amp to power your system versus using the AVR's internal units
This would come into play if you had a harder to drive, than typical, speaker system or just wanted to expand the dynamics of what you have
At the end of the day, more options for not a lot of money
The question for folks will be are the full pre-outs and extra 3 years of warranty worth the extra $63?

Can anyone elaborate on this? Does this means what's played on the receiver can be "broadcast" out to the Sonon speakers - either via Sonos or AirPlay 2 - or those can connect into the receiver and then what is already being played on the network can also be played via the receiver.

Good point and make sure they are an authorized seller for Onkyo also.
How realistic are pre outs actually even used especially on a $579 AVR?
Can't tell you how people I've helped that paid extra pre outs for "just in case" & never used them!
Decent external amps aren't cheap, adding a budget one is kinda a side grade move & often not worth the cost imo.
